President's Update
Dear Families,

I recently read a quote by Saint John Henry Newman that I thought was worth sharing:

Catholic education “is to reunite things which were in the beginning joined together by God and have been put asunder by man.”

The quote reminded me that education is a matter of faith. Parents and educators alike provide instruction, guidance, and encouragement. Our expectation is that the things we share and role model will take hold, and the student will take steps in the right direction. Wisdom, like a seed, is planted inside the mind of a teenager, and we, by faith, expectantly wait to see what will take root and how it will grow.

There once was a tightrope walker who amazed crowds by balancing on a wire above Niagara Falls, crossing back and forth. He then included a wheelbarrow filled with rocks and repeated the feat. He asked the crowd how many believed he could repeat the crossing with a person in the wheelbarrow instead of the rocks. Everyone raised their hand. He then asked for volunteers. No one was willing to get in the wheelbarrow. Although everyone believed with their head, no one believed with their heart. No one had authentic faith.

Faith is a decision based upon an object, or a belief causing us to act in a certain way. We are all in the “wheelbarrow” at Malden Catholic. Each of us has made a decision to make the “crossing” of high school with our students here. Faith-based high school education is a high calling and not for the weak of heart. We are partnering with God in our efforts of developing students to become people of character.

At our recent Open House, I shared with prospective families that Malden Catholic is a one-of-a-kind school. We are a Xaverian school embracing a Codivisional model to transform students’ lives. Thank you for your faith in us to deliver the best Catholic education in the area.

Next week, all Freshmen at Malden Catholic will be experiencing a Retreat Day. What is a Retreat Day? A break from regular classes to come together as a group in order to pray, reflect, play some games, and have some community with one another. It is an integral part of the Malden Catholic spiritual experience.

The Girls Division will participate in the retreat on Monday, October 24, and the Boys Division will experience the retreat on Tuesday, October 25. The Retreats will be held at Malden Catholic; however, students will not attend classes these days, and pizza will be provided for lunch (students may bring a lunch if they have specific dietary restrictions). Students may dress down for the Retreat Day according to Dress Down Day protocol listed in the MC 2022 - 2023 Parent Student Handbook.

Lynch Foundation Family Survey – State of the Schools
As part of The Lynch Foundation's “State of the Schools” report, families in the Greater Boston area are invited to respond to regional anonymous survey regarding the reasons families select Catholic schools for their children. The Malden Catholic Fund
The Malden Catholic Fund benefits every student and makes it possible to continually enhance academic innovation, arts and athletic programming, faculty excellence, tuition assistance and scholarships at our school. Our goal is to raise $1.2M for the Malden Catholic Fund, with our current families contributing $100,000 of this amount.

This year, Sallyann (Dimeco) Fama GC '56 and Dr. Eugene Fama '56, the 2013 Nobel Prize winner in Economics Sciences, have offered to match the first $100,000 of parent gifts. Like you, Sallyann and Dr. Fama, who is often called "the father of modern finance," believe in Malden Catholic and know that a gift/investment today will enhance your Lancer’s future.
