President's Update
Dear Families,

I have always dreamed of sailing on the ocean. Growing up in the Midwest made this difficult to become a reality. Now that I reside on the East Coast, it has provided an opportunity to make my dream come true. So, this past summer, I signed up for an adult sailing class at a local club. The class consisted of weekly lessons to learn sailing basics, culminating in a sailing “check ride” for club certification and permission to take a boat out on the ocean solo.

The club offered several types of sailboats to use for lessons. I was drawn to the "Bullseye Class". The Bullseye is small (just under 16 feet) long), fits two to three people and is a sturdy and responsive boat to sail. It made each of my sailing lessons smooth and enjoyable. I especially liked that my sailing journeys with the instructor on this type of boat were successful.

Sometimes, my instructor chose to give me lessons on different types of a sailboats. The larger, faster boats required a great deal more attention. In a strong gust of wind, a larger boat can lean over (heel), and if the skipper does not act quickly, the boat can swamp with water. Although I did well, I did not enjoy these lessons and missed sailing in a Bullseye.

I asked my instructor one day why the Bullseye was so much easier to sail. He told me that the Bullseye had a fixed long keel (counterbalance extension on the boat’s underside) that contained 750 pounds of lead ballast. He explained that this made the Bullseye very stable and almost impossible to swamp with water or capsize. I didn’t realize that my smooth sailing was directly tied to the boat’s strong counterbalance against the wind and waves.

Each school year is a journey, and we pray for calm weather so we can sail along as smoothly as possible. Yet we know, as we all saw with the pandemic, that there could be unexpected situations on the horizon. Schools require a strong “counterbalance,” and Malden Catholic is no exception. Our faith is one of our most vital sources that balances and unifies our community. Another essential source that strengthens our community, but is less discussed, is our Fund for Malden Catholic (FFMC).

We operate with a unique financial structure since the amount we charge for tuition does not cover the cost of educating our students. The current cost of a Malden Catholic education is over $21,000, exceeding the tuition by 27%. Many other independent schools operate similarly, but Malden Catholic leads the way by providing the best education for the most affordable tuition. Even those families who pay full tuition are essentially receiving financial aid. The Fund for Malden Catholic benefits every student and makes it possible to continually enhance academic innovation, arts and athletic programming, faculty excellence, tuition assistance, and scholarships. MC relies on alums, friends, and family such as you to bridge the gap with gifts to the Fund for Malden Catholic.

My goal is to reach $1.2 million through gifts from parents, friends, alums, and donors. Last year, we reached our $1 million goal, and I know we can achieve this new goal! I will be sending a letter to each of our families to consider adding our needed “ballast” for this school year’s journey.

Thank you for being so supportive,

John Thornburg
