Dear Families,
Some friends invited my wife and me to spend the day on their boat Labor Day Weekend. The boat was moored in the Annisquam River, and we would travel up the coast to a favorite sandbar. We were excited as this would be the first time we would experience the North Shore this way.
After a short ride, we arrived at the appointed sandbar. Many other boaters had the same idea. The entire area was lined with boats anchored just offshore. Families were swimming, sunbathing, and enjoying the day. I looked forward to enjoying the same activities, but our first task was to find a place to anchor.
Once we located an open spot on the sandbar, my friend enlisted me to throw the anchor. I stood at the front (bow) of the boat with anchor and rope in my hands. He carefully backed his boat towards shore. Distracted by the beautiful surroundings, I didn't throw the anchor in time. Several bystanders came running to stop us from running aground, which fortunately was avoided.
I succeeded in my second attempt under my friend's careful eye and strict command. The anchor line went taut and stopped the boat several feet from shore. My friend quickly jumped out with another anchor to secure his boat's rear (stern). The changing tide and current made it necessary to have two anchor points. I noticed all the other boats had a similar arrangement.
We enjoyed the rest of the day. My friend regularly checked his boat and made minor adjustments to the anchor lines. I was impressed how, even though the tide changed and the current threatened to push it away, the anchor lines kept it safely in one spot. I learned the importance of having a strong anchor.
The Book of James instructs us that our faith prevents us from being like ocean waves driven and tossed by the wind (James 1:6). Faith is the line that connects us to our anchor – Our Lord Jesus Christ. When the currents and tides of life change and threaten to run us aground or push us in a direction we don't want to go, we need to remember there is One that does not change and will give us the strength to remain where we can't by ourselves.
Thank you for your support,
John K. Thornburg
This hope we have an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and reliable…(Hebrews 6:19)
