President's Update
Dear Families,

Welcome to the 2022 - 2023 school year! Welcome back to all of our returning families, and a special welcome to our new families. This school year promises to be exciting as we celebrate our theme for this school year - Plus Ultra! This phrase is readily seen on our school crest and our communication materials. It is a Latin phrase that translated means "More Beyond!" It is not uncommon to hear a faculty or staff member refer to a student who has gone above and beyond as being, "Plus Ultra!" Plus Ultra! is a hallmark of embracing our Xaverian charism (spirit) in all we do.

Greek mythology tells of the phrase "Ne plus ultra" or "no more beyond" being placed on Hercules' Pillars near the Straits of Gibraltar. It marked the edge of what was then the known world and warned sailors to go no further as there was nothing left to discover. This phrase shut the door to new possibilities and kept would-be explorers seeking new adventures.

It was not until the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, also the Duke of Burgundy and King of Spain, that a new phrase became well known. He made "Plus Ultra" his motto that expressed a new vision of the world with unlimited possibilities. For Charles V, there was always something "further beyond" or "more beyond." His mindset and vision helped facilitate a new era of discovery and adventure.

It is interesting to note that Plus Ultra is also found in other places. It is the official motto of Spain, found prominently on their coat of arms. The English philosopher Sir Francis Bacon used it as his motto.  Plus Ultra can be found on antique tiles at famous Florida resorts, on modern research and science buildings in the Netherlands, and Plus Ultra Airlines flies out of Spain. Plus Ultra has been used as an inspirational phrase throughout history.

We are emphasizing our school motto this year as a community-wide call to encourage all of us to reach to be "more beyond." Malden Catholic has experienced Plus Ultra! as it has seen unprecedented growth and success in recent years. I believe we have just begun to experience what is "further beyond," and now is the time to sail out into new adventures with courageous faith. May we all share our own Plus Ultra! this year.

To celebrate our Plus Ultra! spirit and the beginning of a new school year, I ask that all parents sign up for an official Malden Catholic lawn sign that they can proudly display in front of their homes. We will be sending out additional information about where families can sign up and signs will be distributed later this month. It will be wonderful to see our "MC" proudly displayed throughout the surrounding Boston area.

I look forward to seeing you this school year,

John K. Thornburg
