Lehman Colleagues:
Spring has finally sprung. It was nice to usher it in by offering remarks to welcome a greater number of visitors to the Lehman campus community and to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the CUNY Mexican Studies Institute. The offerings were well-attended and diverse, which is one way for me to encourage you again to take the Campus Climate Survey, which will only take 20 minutes of your time, but is a critical way for us to work toward greater equity for everyone on campus: https://rankinsurveys3.com/lehman.cuny/
I was honored to give welcome remarks for Professor Naomi Zack’s Phi Beta Kappa professorship lecture series on intersectionality on March 23rd. I felt privileged, too, to host my first Lehman Lecture on what would have been Herbert H. Lehman’s 144th birthday, March 28th. CUNY Trustee and accomplished public servant Fernando Ferrer offered important insight about civic engagement in our times in response to thoughtful questions posed by Professor Eileen Markey. It was great to engage with members of the Lehman family and others who came for the event before heading to the CUNY Graduate Center to be a part of the CUNY Mexican Studies Institute’s 10th Anniversary conference, featuring Dr. Julio Frenk and many others who reflected on the importance of the Institute in New York City.
As the calendar moves forward into April and we await deliberations on the budget, we are also preparing for a much-needed spring break before the end of the semester is upon us.
Celebrating Excellence
We received excellent news that Congressman Adriano Espaillat secured $250,000 in funding for Lehman College in the FY 2022 Omnibus Appropriations Package. It is the first time Lehman has received discretionary funds from a member of Congress. The funding is an affirmation of the work of the Bronx Recovery Corps and a huge boost to that program and our work as a whole, as we work to recover from the economic damages of the pandemic.
We continue to partner with World Central Kitchen which will allow students impacted by the pandemic who have relied on the Food Bank to order from restaurants:
Interim Associate Dean Amod Choudhary in the School of Natural and Social Sciences shared a wonderful recap of the HSI Battle of the Brains competition in Austin, Texas, held March 8 through 12th. Lehman’s team of four students – all Computer Sciences/Mathematics majors -- and Accounting Professor Sean Stein Smith placed fifth out of 13 teams, which was an accomplishment in the intense competition where the top team had 10 students with two advisors and coaches.
