New UNM Study Improves Care for Babies Facing Opioid Withdrawal

New research from The University of New Mexico School of Medicine is helping transform care for newborns experiencing neonatal opiate withdrawal syndrome. Led by Jessie Maxwell, Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Neurosciences & Director for Neonatal Research at the UNM School of Medicine, the study highlights the effectiveness of the “Eat, Sleep, Console” (ESC) approach, a family-centered model that reduces medication use while improving outcomes. Babies treated with ESC showed stronger early developmental scores and shorter hospital stays—often by nearly a week. Just as importantly, this research reflects and benefits New Mexico’s communities, including rural hospitals. By empowering families and expanding access to compassionate, evidence-based care, UNM is improving the health and future of our state’s most vulnerable patients.
