Good afternoon Lobos –

As summer continues to unfold across our beautiful campus, there’s a special kind of energy in the air—one fueled by the excitement and anticipation of new beginnings. Each year, UNM welcomes the newest members of our pack through New Student Orientation (NSO), which not only marks the transition of our newest Lobos into university life but also embodies the heart of our mission: welcoming, supporting, and inspiring the next generation of scholars, leaders, and citizens.

New Student Orientation isn’t just about schedules and campus tours; it’s the first chapter in the stories our students will write at UNM. It’s where lasting friendships are formed, essential resources are discovered, and the vibrant spirit of our community reveals itself in full. Watching new Lobos find their way reminds us all why our work is so meaningful.

None of this would be possible without the tireless dedication of the departments, staff and students who plan and deliver these engaging and comprehensive experiences. I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to our College Enrichment Program, Academic Advisers, Enrollment Management Division, orientation leaders, and all of our campus partners whose passion and care set the tone for success. Your efforts ensure that every new student feels valued and welcomed into our ever-growing Lobo family.

As we greet our newest Lobos, let us all remember that the foundation we build together during these first days will support their journeys for years to come.

UNM Scientists Take Major Step Toward Alzheimer’s Vaccine

Big news from UNM researchers: a potential vaccine targeting Alzheimer’s disease is moving into its first human clinical trial. Backed in part by a $1 million grant from the Alzheimer’s Association’s Part the Cloud initiative, the early-phase study will test a vaccine designed by UNM scientists to clear toxic tau protein from the brain—a key culprit in Alzheimer’s progression. The Phase 1a/1b trial will focus on safety, tolerability, and whether participants develop antibodies to tau; if successful, a Phase 2 trial will follow. This work underscores UNM’s national leadership in neuroscience and innovation, and we’re proud to support this vital effort to change the future of Alzheimer’s treatment.

Dodd Named President of ASHP

Congratulations to Melanie Dodd, associate dean and professor in the UNM College of Pharmacy, who was recently installed as president of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). Not only is she the first person from New Mexico to hold this prestigious national role, but she’s also helping shine a national spotlight on the incredible pharmacy innovation, advocacy, and training happening right here at UNM. Her leadership is opening new doors and opportunities for New Mexico and the nation, and we’re proud to have a Lobo leading the way in advancing pharmacy practice nationwide.

Lobo Welcome Center Brings Home Two Awards

Our amazing Lobo Welcome Center continues to rack up awards and recognition for its innovative design and use of space. This time it’s being honored with not one, but two Best Buildings Awards from the Associated General Contractors of America, New Mexico chapter, winning one for Best Building ($5–$10 million) and another as the Student Choice Award winner. Originally a 1941 John Gaw Meem design, this historic gem has been beautifully reimagined by UNM Facilities Design & Construction and partners into a vibrant first stop for future Lobos. With classic adobe walls, modern touches, and an inviting atmosphere, the Welcome Center is truly a celebration of Lobo pride—past, present, and future. Congratulations to the incredible teams who made this inspiring and award-winning space possible!

Have a great week, and let's go, Lobos!
