Dear Optimist Club Presidents,

I hope this finds you and your Optimist Club healthy!

I realize that you know what makes a person healthy – you eat well, you exercise, and you practice a happy mindset! How about an Optimist member, what determines if they are healthy?

I believe they generally approach life from a place of optimism! That overall attitude to give every living creature a smile is prevalent in our members. Healthy Optimists also are involved in their club activities and events. They may serve on a committee or the board. They probably show up to help with a few of these club services every year. Certainly, they know about the workings of their club and serve as a leader and a doer where they can.

Now let’s think about what are the factors that indicate an Optimist club is healthy. Healthy Optimist clubs:

  • Involve all club members, matching their skills and interests to the task.
  • They welcome visitors encouraging them to attend future club activities.
  • Optimists are aware of members who may be falling through the cracks - no longer attending club meetings/gathering, backing off involvement in club events. The leaders and members of the club use this awareness to reach out and remind the member that they are valued and encourage them to attend an upcoming event together.
  • Hold new member recruitment events to bring in new members, who bring fresh ideas and community representation to their club. They involve the new members immediately in a project or activity that interests them. They welcome them at gatherings or events.
  • Has activities and events that meet the needs of the youth and bring fun and optimism to their community.

Do a health check with your club. Making changes to meet the needs of your members and community should not be difficult and will bring out the best in everyone!

Finally, don’t forget to sign up for our 107th Optimist International Convention, June 29 to July 2, in St. Louis, Missouri!

See you in St. Louie!
