COUNCIL TRANSPORTATION CHAIR YDANIS RODRIGUEZ TO JOIN SAFE STREETS ADVOCATES AND ELECTED OFFICIALS TO MARK LATEST STEP TOWARD VISION ZERO

Council to Discuss 22 Street Safety Related Bills in 2nd Vision Zero Transportation Committee Hearing

New York, NY--On Wednesday, April 30th, 2014, at 12, noon, NYC Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez, Chair of the Council Committee on Transportation, will join Council colleagues and advocates for safer streets at City Hall to acknowledge the latest action being taken to achieve Mayor Bill de Blasio's Vision Zero plan. This rally will take place immediately before the NYC Council Transportation Committee holds a hearing on 22 Vision Zero related bills, a complete list of which can be found here.

The bills range from increasing penalties on drivers that fail to yield to pedestrians; to Cooper's Law, named after Cooper Stock, a 9 year old boy killed by a taxi driver on the Upper West Side; to a law aimed at curbing the dirt bike menace that plagues New York City every summer.

Traffic crashes account for more deaths every year than gun violence and are the leading cause of injury related death for children under 14 years old. The city has taken a proactive approach to an issue of serious concern to many residents across NYC and this hearing is the latest step.

At the hearing, as a show of solidarity for the families of victims of traffic violence, the organization Families for Safer Streets will have an opportunity to testify prior to the administration, specifically on the need to lower speed limits in New York City, supporting a resolution introduced by CM Rodriguez and CM Levin in February.
