Press Forward News | October 2023

Jessica,

Thank you for signing up for Press Forward updates, and for your curiosity, interest and good questions. We’ve heard from newsrooms eager for more details, and wanted to send an update on our work.

Press Forward’s September announcement sought to raise national attention about the importance of local news and information, and to encourage more funders to join us. As a result, dozens of donors from across the country reached out, eager to begin or expand their giving to journalism. A big win for the field.

Because making local news sustainable will require substantial, additional investments, fundraising is our top priority for now. That may sound counter-intuitive, coming from a group of foundations, and even frustrating. However, as many news organizations know too well, it takes time and a series of conversations to raise money from new donors.

We are also sensitive to the challenging financial situation many news organizations find themselves in. Coalition members with existing journalism programs have continued grantmaking without pause. For now, grantseekers should continue to work with individual funders as they normally would. The first opportunity to engage with Press Forward will happen in 2024, when we share grant guidelines for the pooled fund. (More on that below.)

While we’re thrilled by the early support, we are paying close attention to reactions, from public media stations, journalism affinity groups, and others. Addressing long standing inequities in coverage is a top priority for Press Forward. It’s one of our core values and funding priorities. We’re committed to being transparent about how the coalition invests its funds.

Thank you for your patience as we grow.

Press Forward is a national call to action. It will take local support and funding to reimagine local news long-term. We look forward to continuing to build this movement in partnership with you.

How Press Forward Funds are Invested

Here are the three ways coalition members can invest in Press Forward:

  • Aligned Grantmaking: The bulk of funding committed to Press Forward so far will be invested directly in local news initiatives. Individual funders will make decisions in alignment with their mission and priorities, and their announcements will be made over time, starting this fall.

  • Pooled Fund: A smaller number of Press Forward coalition partners have contributed to the national pooled fund for local news. Expect grant guidelines for this fund in 2024.

  • Press Forward Local: These chapters are a new opportunity for funders to work together to address specific, local needs. Next month a handful of Press Forward Local initiatives will be announced, with the goal of inspiring additional donors to create place-based initiatives for local news. Any funders interested in starting a local chapter should contact [email protected].

All coalition investments are guided by our funding priorities. We will share more details in the months to come.

  • Director of Press Forward: We’re searching for a Director to grow and lead Press Forward. Learn more about the role and apply here.

  • Advisory Council: We’re forming an Advisory Council to help guide and shape the strategic goals of this national initiative. Members of the Advisory Council will be experts and practitioners working in journalism and/or the democracy field and will serve a two-year term. We are inviting members of the community to nominate individuals who should be considered for the Advisory Council. Submit your nominations here.

We’ve been meeting with news organizations and potential funders at virtual and in-person events across the country, most recently at the Southeast gathering of the LION Publishers, at an INN member briefing and at the New Mexico Local News and Colorado Media Project summits.

At INN, members asked how Press Forward will measure its success. While the coalition is still creating a framework and metrics, three areas of impact are emerging, Kathy Im, MacArthur’s Director of Journalism and Media, said:

  • Is American democracy stronger?
  • Have we made a positive impact on the journalism field?
  • Is philanthropy doing what it can to support local news?
