FOR IMMEDIATE
RELEASE
San
Francisco, CA (December 2, 2010) -
The South Asian Bar Association of
Northern California (SABA-NC) is proud to announce that former
SABA-NC president Paul Grewal was sworn in today as a United States
magistrate judge for the Northern District of California. Judge
Grewal will be the second South Asian magistrate judge in the
United States and will sit in the court's San Jose division.
After graduating from the University
of Chicago in 1996, Judge Grewal clerked for a federal district
court judge in Ohio and a federal appellate court judge at the
Federal Circuit. Thereafter, Judge Grewal joined Day
Casebeer LLP, where he focused on complex litigation and
intellectual property matters. Judge Grewal became
the youngest attorney ever promoted to partner at Day
Casebeer. In 2009, he joined Howrey LLP as a partner
in their East Palo Alto office. There he served as
the office's Recruiting Partner and a member of Howrey's IP Senior
Leadership Group.
Judge Grewal was recently honored
with the North American Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA)
"Best Under 40" award. The award is given each year to applaud
individuals within the Asian Pacific American legal community who
have achieved prominence in their field and at the same time
"demonstrated a strong commitment to civic or community
affairs." Throughout his distinguished career, Judge
Grewal has remained active in pro bono work. At Day
Casebeer, he started the firm's pro bono program, which
focused on helping clients resolve patent and other technology
disputes. More recently, he has worked with Community Legal
Services of East Palo Alto, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, and
the Environmental Literacy Project.
In addition to serving as the
President and Vice-President of SABA-NC, Judge Grewal was also a
former President and Vice President of the North American South
Asian Bar Association (NASABA). For his years of service to the
organization, Judge Grewal received NASABA's Cornerstone Award.
"It is exciting to see Judge Grewal
appointed to the federal bench in the Northern District," said
Sujal Shah, co-president of SABA-NC. "He has been an
avid supporter of SABA-NC over the years and a mentor to countless
South Asian attorneys and law students in the Bay
Area. His experience with intellectual property
litigation also will be a great resource for the Northern
District."
SABA-NC co-president Hozefa Botee
also commented, "As a minority bar association with over 400
members, SABA-NC has focused on efforts to diversify the state and
federal judiciary. Appointing Judge Grewal to the
federal bench represents further progress in making the judiciary
more representative of our diverse society."
