City of Westland Offers Enhanced Sanitation Options 
Westland, MI -   The City of Westland now offers residents a number of options to properly dispose of unwanted items and avoid bulk pick up fees.    
  • Household Hazardous Waste - Saturday, August 13 is Household Hazardous Waste Day in Westland.  Wayne County residents can rid themselves of unwanted household waste in the parking lot of Westland Shopping Center, located at 35000 Warren Rd.  Examples of acceptable items include household paints, stains, dyes, floor wax, floor care products, carpet cleaner, furniture polish, bathroom cleaners, stain removers, solvents, non controlled pharmaceutical waste, nail polish, glue, fertilizer, lawn and garden chemicals, pesticides, antifreeze, motor oil, gasoline, automotive batteries and dry cell batteries, florescent bulbs, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, mercury thermometers, thermostats computers, monitors, printers, scanners, keyboards, mice, cell phones, fax machines, copiers and televisions.   • Permit Free Garage Sales - September 8-10 and September 15-17 will be permit-free garage sale weekends to help residents dispose of gently used items and make a little extra money at the same time, the City of Westland is offering two weekends in which the standard $12 permit fee will be waved.  As an added incentive to participate and to help your garage sale be successful, the city will help promote your sale for free on our website.  Individuals will be able to view an interactive map to locate all of the garage sales in the area as well as search for particular items of interest.  Visit cityofwestland.com to register your sale or to search for garage sales near you.
  • Large Item Disposal - The final option of the season will be a free bulk drop off day on Saturday, September 24 from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m.  Westland residents can bring their bulk items to the DPS yard, located at 37137 Marquette and drop them off at no charge.  Proof of Westland residency will be required.  Examples of acceptable items include major and small appliances, carpet and padding, furniture, televisions, toilets and other generic bulky items.  This is a residential program and commercial and building materials will not be accepted.  As part of Westland's Compassionate City Initiative, residents in need of assistance due to age or physical disability can call the Mayor's Office at 734-467-3200 by Wednesday, September 21st to make special arrangements on this day.  
  • Clothing Recycling - The City of Westland has a partnership Simple Recycling,a local company which allows residents to recycle old clothing, textiles and small household goods so that they don't end up in a landfill.  Free, specially marked bags and stickers are available at Westland City Hall which can be filled with items like clothes, purses, shoes, curtains and bedding and then placed by the curb. Residents can also box up small household appliances and electronics and place a Simple Recycling sticker on them. On your regularly scheduled recycling pick up day, a dedicated truck will come and pick up these items at no cost to you.Residents can still use the boxes located in the parking lot at all City buildings.   • Curbside Recycling - Don't forget the City of Westland also offers an award winning curbside pickup program which makes recycling easy.  You can put all of your recyclable materials  in the free blue bin and take it the the curb on your scheduled pick up day.  This program offers a simple way to get rid of cardboard, newspaper, aluminum, steel or tin cans, plastic and glass bottles and jars.  For a complete list of what can be placed in the bins or to view a recycling route map, visit www.cityofwestland.com.  Residents in need of a second recycling cart can call the Department of Public Service at (734)728-1770 and one will be sent to the home absolutely free.
