CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, OHIO – The Cleveland Heights Fire Department announced today that next week, area fire departments will conduct a regional training exercise focused on search and rescue operations for fire victims in low to zero visibility conditions. This crucial training aims to enhance life-saving skills and promote inter-departmental collaboration, ensuring the highest level of preparedness for emergency scenarios.
The training will include hands-on practice of various techniques for locating and safely removing fire victims, including specialized methods for bringing victims out windows and down ladders. A significant emphasis will be placed on the critical importance of maintaining a low profile during victim removal to mitigate exposure to the intense heat and toxic byproducts of combustion found in fire environments. To create a realistic yet safe training environment, theatrical smoke will be utilized. No live fire will be involved in any part of the exercise.
"The safety of our community members is paramount; and continuous, realistic training is fundamental to our ability to protect them," said Marty O’Connor, Battalion Chief at the Cleveland Heights Fire Department. "This regional exercise allows our firefighters to refine life-saving techniques in challenging conditions and fosters cooperation among our mutual aid departments. We are committed to ensuring our crews are always at their peak readiness to respond effectively when lives are on the line."
Cleveland Heights Mayor Kahlil Seren praised the collaborative training, saying, "The fire service is an example of the kind of regional approach to which we in local government aspire. Mutual aid is not reserved for those attention-grabbing emergencies; they require the preparation and relationship building that this program represents. My thanks to BC O’Connor, CHFD, and our partner agencies; we’re in good hands.”
The regional training is hosted by the Cleveland Heights Fire Department and will see participation from neighboring departments, including the Shaker Heights Fire Department, University Heights Fire Department, and South Euclid Fire Department. This collaborative effort underscores the commitment of these departments to unified emergency response and shared expertise.
The training sessions will take place on June 25, 26, and 27, at 2881 Noble Rd. in Cleveland Heights.
