Sara Riel: Committed to Suicide Prevention in Our Communities
Promoting suicide prevention in our communities is crucial for reducing suicide rates and providing support to individuals who may be struggling with suicidal thoughts. At Sara Riel, our “Vision” is for people to reach their full potential mentally, physically, socially and spiritually. When people struggle with thoughts of suicide, its difficult to move forward toward reaching their full potential.
Sara Riel staff and management have all completed the Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) program developed by LivingWorks, a multi-national training organization.
One in 20 Canadians are struggling with thoughts of suicide. According to statistics provided by LivingWorks Canada, our population in 2020 was 38,037,204. In that year there were a reported:
- Suicides - 3,839 – just over 1% of the Canadian population.
- Thoughts of Suicide – 1,901,860 - 5% of the population.
With this many people, struggling with thoughts of suicide, its not feasible that everyone will be able at access the help of a professional in the time they may most need it.
We want to empower YOU to play a role in keeping our communities suicide-safer!
“People who are struggling with thoughts of suicide are typically going to seek help and understanding first from friends, family, teachers, coworkers, clergy, etc. It is important to calmly be there for them, and with the right knowledge and skills, the vast majority of suicides can be prevented,” noted Tara Snider, Sara Riel Chief Executive Officer.
