CFVI Mourns the Loss of Alda Monsanto, Beloved Philanthropist and Community Leader

U.S. Virgin Islands, January 14, 2025 With heavy hearts, the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands (CFVI) extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Alda Monsanto, whose recent passing has left an indelible emptiness in our community.

Alda Monsanto’s legacy of selfless service, philanthropy, and unwavering dedication to her community will forever be remembered. As a Director Emeritus and founding board member of the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands, Alda played a pivotal role in shaping the Foundation’s mission. She was also a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and a treasured CFVI Angel donor whose generosity touched countless lives.

“Alda was more than a friend, colleague, and mentor; she was a beacon of kindness, wisdom, and compassion,” said CFVI President Dee Baecher-Brown. “Her loss leaves a profound void in our hearts and in the community she so deeply cherished.”

CFVI Board members reflect on Monsanto’s legacy with admiration, describing her as “a guiding light for the territory,” “a warm, intelligent, and loving soul,” and “a true giant in life, love, and generosity.” Her elegant demeanor and radiant smile made an everlasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing her.

“We are incredibly grateful for Alda’s lasting contributions—not only to CFVI, but to the entire U.S. Virgin Islands,” said Baecher-Brown. “Her vision and dedication helped shape a brighter future for all of us.”

Monsanto’s professional journey was equally distinguished. She played a key role in establishing Merchants Commercial Bank and served as a founding member of its board. Her commitment to public service was evident in her many influential positions, including her tenure as Executive Director of the Virgin Islands Housing Authority from 1971 to 1980. From 1983 to 1991, she served as the Chief Labor Negotiator for the Government of the Virgin Islands, where her work profoundly impacted the territory’s workforce and economy. Monsanto also served as the Training Coordinator for Career Exploration Programs with the St. Thomas/St. John Chamber of Commerce, guiding young people as they developed essential skills and explored new opportunities.

Alda Monsanto’s legacy will continue to inspire and uplift the Virgin Islands for generations to come. She leaves behind a community forever bettered by her kindness, generosity, and tireless commitment to service.
