City Calls on Community for
Unity Days 2019 Event and Program Ideas
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - The City of Charlottesville and the Unity Days Action Committee are calling on community members, organizations, and groups to propose event and programming ideas for Unity Days 2019 taking place in May, June, July, and August.  

For more information on Unity Days event proposal deadlines and how to submit, go to charlottesville.org/unitydays .

All completed proposal forms will go through a committee review process and will be made available for public viewing. If selected, applicants will have the opportunity to expand on their submitted proposal during a public meeting with the committee. Each applicant will have up to three minutes to present their proposal, followed by a three minute question and answer session with the panel.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to take the Unity Days Mission Statement and monthly themes under consideration when planning their events or programming.

UNITY DAYS MISSION STATEMENT

Unity Days is a series of events and programs that educate, inspire, and honor people in our community to move towards healing and unity along a path of economic and racial justice. 

UNITY DAYS MONTHLY THEMES

  • May - Our community’s history of race relations.
  • June - Breaking down institutions of oppression; Building approaches to a civically-engaged community working towards economic and racial justice.
  • July - Honoring community and neighborhood activists making change.
  • August - Four days of activities focusing on education, honor, inspiration, and solemn remembrance.

ABOUT UNITY DAYS 

During its regular meeting on February 4, 2019, City Council unanimously approved the designation of a new community-driven event called Unity Days to be held annually on the second weekend of August (and on August 12 when it falls during the week). Unity Days is an opportunity for Charlottesville to educate, inspire, and honor people in our community and to create movement towards healing and unity as we strive to achieve economic and racial justice.

Unity Days 2019 will take place from May through August and is planned and organized by members of the Charlottesville community with logistical and financial support from the City of Charlottesville.
