SAN DIEGO, Calif., Thursday, Sept. 15, 2022 - Leaders of the San Diego County Young Democrats and the San Diego Democrats for Equality announced that their clubs’ membership voted overwhelmingly to endorse David Dodson for California State Board of Equalization District 4. The Young Democrats voted unanimously to rate ignominious incumbent Mike Schaefer as unacceptable while the Democrats for Equality voted with a 90% majority to rate him as unacceptable.
Club Presidents Ryan Trabuco (Democrats for Equality) and Codi Vierra (County Young Democrats) call on Democratic elected officials and leaders, the California Democratic Party, and the Democratic Parties of San Diego, Orange, Riverside, Imperial, and San Bernardino counties to withdraw their endorsements, and not spend any Party money on promoting the controversial candidacy of Mike Schaefer.
Mike Schaefer has most recently been in the news for lying about major endorsements from the Governor and Lieutenant Governor, and has a controversial history including a conviction for spousal abuse, being disbarred as an attorney, and being a slumlord in Los Angeles.
San Diego County Young Democrats President Codi Vierra’s statement:
“Board of Equalization Member Mike Schaefer’s election was a fluke that has brought shame to our Party. Considering his conviction for spousal abuse and other problematic factors in his past we believe he is unfit to serve another term in office.”
San Diego Democrats for Equality President Ryan Trabuco’s statement:
“Google ‘Mike Schaefer’ and ‘Los Angeles Times’ and that should tell you everything you need to know about how absolutely awful his record has been on the Board of Equalization, and his even worse history as a wife-beating slumlord, perennial candidate in multiple cities and states, disbarments in California and Nevada, and the cherry-on-top having had a restraining order filed against him several years ago by 3-time Emmy-winning actor and comedian Brad Garrett.”
The San Diego County Young Democrats is one of the largest Young Democratic Clubs in the state representing Democrats aged 13 – 35.
The San Diego Democrats for Equality is one of San Diego’s largest Democratic Clubs representing the LGBTQ+ community and its allies in the Democratic Party.
