Drive Clean Indiana's Annual Conference & Expo Celebrates Sustainable Transportation Achievements
Michigan City, IN — Drive Clean Indiana, the state's only designated Clean Cities Coalition by the U.S. Department of Energy, successfully hosted its highly anticipated Annual Conference & Expo on August 23, 2023, at the Blue Chip Casino's Stardust Event Center in Michigan City. The event provided a platform for sustainable transportation enthusiasts, experts, and leaders to gather and share insights on advancing environmentally friendly transportation solutions.
The conference kicked off with a welcome reception on August 22, fostering valuable connections among attendees. The main event featured a series of engaging breakout sessions, including discussions on renewable fuels, sustainability in school bus fleets, collaboration in economic development, equity in transportation, electrification strategies, and more. The event also featured a lunchtime panel, presented by bp, exploring their vision for a low-carbon fuel future.
Carl Lisek, Executive Director of Drive Clean Indiana, stated, "Our Annual Conference & Expo continues to serve as a vital platform for sustainable transportation innovation and collaboration. We are proud of the progress made by Drive Clean Indiana members in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting clean energy solutions across the state."
One of the highlights of the conference was the recognition of Indiana's sustainable transportation leaders through various awards. The awards celebrated the significant achievements of Drive Clean Indiana members in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and gasoline usage in 2022. Notably, Drive Clean Indiana achieved a substantial milestone by reducing over 28 million gasoline gallon equivalents in 2022 alone, contributing to Indiana's petroleum reduction and emission reduction statistics.
Among the recipients of these awards were Metroports, recognized as the Offroad Champion; Hamilton Southeastern Schools, acclaimed as the School Bus Fleet of the Year; Representative Jeff Thompson, lauded as the Legislator of the Year; State Representative Carey Hamilton, honored as the Empowering Woman of the Year; Muncie Sanitary District, esteemed as the Clean Fuel Champion; Mayor Brian Snedecor of the City of Hobart and Phil Reagon of Muncie Sanitary District, both inducted into the DCI Hall of Fame; and bp, acknowledged as the Overall Fuel Member Organization.
In addition to these awards, Drive Clean Indiana also manages the Green Fleet programs for two Northern Indiana metropolitan planning organizations, extending its impact on sustainable transportation practices. Recipients of the Green Fleet Awards included South Bend Community Schools, named the MACOG Green Fleet Member of the Year, and Gary Public Transportation Corporation, recognized as the NIRPC Green Fleet Member of the Year.
The event concluded with an announcement about Drive Clean Indiana's upcoming 25th-anniversary celebration in 2024, marking a quarter-century of leadership in promoting clean and sustainable transportation solutions.
