COLUMBUS (October 2, 2024) — The Ohio Association of Community Action Agencies (OACAA) supports Ohio's Issue One redistricting proposal to remove politicians from the process and put redistricting in the hands of Ohio's citizens.
"Ohioans have historically and overwhelmingly supported anti-gerrymandering initiatives," said Philip E. Cole, executive director of OACAA. "Issue One will ensure Ohio's congressional and legislative districts are as fairly drawn as the law allows and the voters intended. I am not sure what is wrong with that."
The Citizens Not Politicians Amendment will ban lobbyists and politicians from participating in the map-drawing process. Instead, fifteen citizens representing Republicans, Democrats, and Independents will be responsible for drawing fair maps reflecting the voters' will.
"The current seven-member commission always favors the party in power, removing the incentive to draw impartial, competitive districts," said Cole. "Evenly aligning a citizen-led commission should create fairer districts and end gerrymandering in our state. We encourage all Ohioans to research the amendment and vote Yes on Issue One in this election."
