PEORIA, IL (October 1, 2026) — The Peoria Park District has earned national accreditation through the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA), recognizing the District’s compliance with national standards for park and recreation management, operations, and service to the community.
CAPRA, administered through the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), is the only national accreditation program for park and recreation agencies. The accreditation process provides a framework for quality assurance and continuous improvement by evaluating agencies against nationally recognized standards for operations, management, and service.
“This recognition belongs to our entire District,” stated Emily Cahill, Executive Director of the Peoria Park District. “CAPRA asks us to look closely at how we serve our community, how we use our resources, and how we can continue to improve. Achieving accreditation reflects the work our employees do every day across our parks, facilities, and programs.”
CAPRA accreditation includes a comprehensive agency self-assessment, documentation demonstrating compliance with national standards, and peer review by park and recreation professionals. The standards serve as an assessment tool for areas including agency organization, planning, financial management, human resources, programs and services, facility and land management, public safety, and other operational practices.
For the Peoria Park District, the process involved employees and departments across the organization reviewing practices, documenting procedures, and demonstrating how District policies and standards are implemented in day-to-day operations.
Through peer verification of compliance with national standards, CAPRA accreditation demonstrates that an agency has the operational capacity to deliver programs, facilities, and services at a high level of quality. The process also encourages regular review of operations, policies and procedures, and establishes a framework for continuous improvement.
“This process is about more than earning a designation,” Cahill said. “It provides an opportunity to evaluate how we work, identify where we can improve, and make sure our practices continue to support the needs of the community we serve. That ongoing evaluation helps us remain accountable to the public and responsible stewards of the resources entrusted to us.”
The Peoria Park District joins a select group of park and recreation agencies nationwide that have earned CAPRA accreditation. Fewer than 2% of park and recreation agencies in the United States hold this designation. Accredited agencies must repeat the accreditation process every five years to maintain compliance with CAPRA standards.
