The Maxwell Football Club and presenting partner adidas today announced that Ty Thompson, from Mesquite High School, Gilbert Arizona and Barrett Carter from North Gwinnett High School, Suwanee Georgia have been selected as the 2020 Maxwell Football Club Offensive and Defensive National High School Players of the Year respectively. This is the 14th year that this award will be presented and the fourth in which offensive and defensive players are both recognized.
In his final season at Mesquite, Thompson threw for 3,171 yards, 31 touchdowns, and rushed for 234 yards and 8 touchdowns. He led his team to AAAA Arizona State Championships in both 2019 and 2020 and is ranked as the No.9 overall prospect in the 2020 class.
The 6-foot-4, 215-pound quarterback adds the honor to a list of accolades that includes All American Bowl Offensive Player of the Year and the 2020 Ed Dougherty Award (Outstanding Player in Arizona). He was named to play in the All American Bowl earlier this month. Thompson will continue his education and football career at the University of Oregon.
Carter just completed his senior season at North Gwinnett High School and is the No.1 ranked linebacker in the 2020 class by Rivals. Generally considered to be one of the most dominating defensive players in the country, Carter posted 44 tackles, 6 sacks and 4 and 1 interception from his linebacker position. He finished his career with 162 tackles, 27 tackles for loss and 18 sacks.
Carter was named as a 2020 High School Butkus Award finalist and was also selected to play in the All American Bowl Game earlier this month. He was selected as the All American Bowl Defensive Player of the Year and he will play college football at Clemson University.

The award was established in 2007 and former winners include Jacob Eason (Lake Stevens HS – Georgia), Trenton Thompson (2014 Westover HS - Georgia), Will Grier (2013 Davidson Day School - Florida), Derrick Henry (2012 Yulee HS - Alabama), Noah Spence (2011 Bishop McDevitt HS - Ohio State), Jeff Driskel (2010 Hagerty HS - Florida), Sharif Floyd (2009 George Washington HS - Florida), Jamarkus McFarland (2008 Lufkin HS - Oklahoma) and DeVier Posey (2007 Cincinnati LaSalle HS - Ohio State). In 2017, for the first time, both offensive and defensive players were recognized, with honors going to Trevor Lawrence (Cartersville, GA High School/Clemson) and Taron Vincent (IMG Academy/Ohio State), Bru McCoy (Mater Dei HS – USC) and Nolan Smith (IMG Academy – Georgia) and last season’s honorees Bryce Young (Mater Dei HS – Alabama) and Bryan Bresee (Damascus HS – Clemson).
