The American Indian Higher Education Consortium Statement on the Passing of Congressman Raúl M. Grijalva

Alexandria, VA – March 14, 2025– The American Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC) is deeply saddened by the passing of Congressman Raúl M. Grijalva. For over two decades, he was a powerful advocate for Tribal Nations, public lands, and educational opportunities. His House Natural Resources Committee leadership helped shape policies that protected Tribal sovereignty and strengthened support for Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs).

Congressman Grijalva was a champion for TCUs and American Indian and Alaska Native students, recognizing these institutions' vital role in their communities. In the 118th Congress, he introduced H.R. 2376, a bill to extend Federal Employee Health Benefits (FEHB) participation to employees of TCUs. AIHEC was proud to endorse this legislation, which aimed to provide TCU faculty and staff with opportunities to participate in the same high quality, lower cost insurance options available to federal employees – but at no cost to the federal government.

AIHEC President and CEO Ahniwake Rose reflected on his legacy: "Congressman Grijalva was not just a supporter of TCUs—he was a true partner who understood their role as extensions of strong, sovereign Tribal Nations. He stood with us to ensure our institutions had the resources they needed. His impact will be felt for generations, and we will honor his work by continuing to advocate for the opportunities he championed.”

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and the people of Arizona. AIHEC joins them in mourning a true public servant and ally.
