Response to House Speaker Matt Huffman Breaking Promise to Fund Public Schools

COLUMBUS - Vouchers Hurt Ohio, the coalition of public schools that has filed a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the EdChoice private school voucher program, responded today to comments from Ohio House Speaker Matt Huffman that the legislature was reneging on a promise to fully fund public schools.

"House Speaker Matt Huffman's comments are deeply disappointing, but we never trusted that state lawmakers would fully fund public schools. Instead, they are intent on giving refunds and rebates to wealthy families to pay for private schools and forcing homeowners and taxpayers to pay more for their local public schools. We believe this system is unsustainable and unconstitutional," said former Ohio Supreme Court Chief Justice Eric Brown, who chairs the Vouchers Hurt Ohio Steering Committee.

"We are saddened, sickened, but not surprised to hear Mr. Huffman break the legislature's promise to fully fund public schools to ensure every child in Ohio has a quality education. Mr. Huffman is the chief cheerleader for spending $1 billion on the EdChoice private school voucher boondoggle for wealthy families and primarily religious schools. This is why we are suing and why school districts across the state are joining our lawsuit," said William L. Phillis, Executive Director for Ohio Coalition for Equity & Adequacy of School Funding.

House Speaker Matt Huffman told reporters this week:

“I don’t think there is a third phase to Cupp-Patterson...As to the expectation that those things are gonna go in… I guess the clear statement I can say is I think those increases in spending are unsustainable.”

The Ohio Coalition for Equity & Adequacy of School Funding is working with Vouchers Hurt Ohio, a growing coalition of public school districts that have come together to sue the state over the unconstitutional and harmful private school voucher program.
