In little more than a few days, we'll be wondering where the time went and asking ourselves if the week after Christmas is too late to send out cards.
At least, some of us will.
No publisher wants to open an email with a subject line that reads "Please pull my ad," but when Glenn Ferdinand wrote that the Have Piano, Will Duel: A Jazzin' Christmas Concert had sold out early, I was delighted to do it. I know regular readers will see this little nag coming: If you want to go to an event, do NOT wait to buy your tickets! With so many things cancelled and others with drastically reduced seating, the early bird will be the one that gets a perch. And yes, some virtual performances have limited capacity, too.
New Arts Blast staffer Petra is fitting in nicely, thank you for asking, combining Arts Blast duties with naps just like a pro.

Arts Educator Maria Tritico Lost to Gun Violence
Director of Education at Lighthouse Art Center Maria Tritico was the innocent victim of a fatal feud between two groups near a Singer Island beach Dec. 6. She was watching her fiancé play frisbee football when a stray bullet struck her in the head, according to news reports. An arrest has been made.
Janeen Mason, Curator at Lighthouse ArtCenter, wrote this in an email to Arts Blast:
"Maria Tritico lost her life in a tragic set of circumstances that placed her in the trajectory of a stray bullet on a perfect Sunday afternoon while she was watching her fiancée play Frisbee with friends on the beach at Singer Island. She had just turned 32. Their wedding was scheduled for New Year’s Eve, 2020. She and her fiancée just bought a house. We are all devastated.
"Maria had a master’s degree in arts therapy and her career included teaching art in the prison system, helping victims of sex trafficking, and teaching art to people in nursing homes and adults who are disabled. She was the Director of Education at the Lighthouse ArtCenter, where she was cherished by our members, students, and staff, alike. Right up until the end of her life she continued to give back to her community. Maria was an organ donor, and one of her long time family friends who for years had been on the list to receive a kidney was a perfect match. This family friend received one of Maria’s kidneys at the Mayo Clinic, and her life was immediately improved.
"We are losing so many people who have no hope in their lives, but when it also takes those who have so much to give, those who could even have shown them another way, the impact seems ever more destructive."

Indian River Charter High School's Brown Bag Concerts on YouTube
It had been too long since I’d heard from the busy faculty at Indian River Charter High School - Schumann School for the Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA), so I tracked down Ray Adams, Artistic Director/Assistant Director at IRCHS for an update. He said the big annual performances are on hold, courtesy of Covid-19, but the music is still happening. No surprise there.
The pared-down schedule is mostly lunchtime performances, “Brown Bags,” streamed live on Instagram and then uploaded to the school’s YouTube channel. The recent Choir and Freshman Jazz Band performances are up and, just added, a December concert by members of the IRCHS Orchestra. The Bach concerto was performed by Sarah Ward (oboe), Dylan Dragone (violin), and Andi Bond (bass), with accompaniment by Jacob Craig, director of music arts at First Presbyterian Church in Vero Beach. Looking ahead to VAPA’s spring, a show set in Classical France is scheduled, along with a classic musical, The Fantastiks.
On a personal note, Adams is preparing for the December 20 Messiah Sing-a-Long with Michael Carter at First Baptist Church in Vero Beach. That annual tradition has had to be scaled back significantly to accommodate the virus. Adams said he has pulled in some outstanding students and old colleagues for the performance. Newcomer Katya Nazarova will play 1st violin. “She moved here with her husband, who is now an instructor at our school in history. She has a Ph.D in violin from the Moscow Conservatory.” Arts Blast readers can hear Nazarova on her YouTube channel. Adams said, “It is great to have wonderful new talent move into our community. Sadly, she hasn't been able to get to know Vero's music community to its fullest because of the virus.” A student of Matt Stott will play 2nd violin, Sarah Ward oboe, and Patrick Gordon bass. “Brady Johnson and I will cover the remaining parts on organ and harpsichord.”

From A Ball of Mud to Your Table
I'm not a scientist, but I like to know how things work.I have a kitchen cabinet chockablock with microwave and dishwasher-safe Soup Bowls I add to my collection every November and now I know how they got that way.
"As a kiln is firing up and cooling down, the changes in temperature make some profound changes in the clay. The clay goes from this soft, totally fragile substance to one which is rock-hard, impervious to water, wind, and time. The change is nearly mystical in its complete metamorphosis and might be deemed so if it were not so common."

2020 Challenges Lead to Changes at Art Museums
The focus pivots to cultural inclusivity and more virtual engagement
Fear and courage. Rage and hope. Loneliness and connectivity. Most of us have experienced these conflicting emotional states this year and now some art museums across the country are developing or expanding relevant exhibits and programs that reflect how 2020 has affected all of us.

Event schedules can change, often at almost the last minute. Verify, double check, and then do it again before you head out the door. And when you do go out, take a mask. Without one, you risk being turned away.
