February Newsletter
"Bringing people and dreams together one home at a time."
February
Greetings!

Water damage is one of the most common and costliest disasters your home can face. It isn't always the result of dramatic events like hurricanes and floods. Homes are often ruined by holes in pipes, major appliance leaks, etc. Left unchecked, even small leaks can cause huge problems, such as black mold and weak joists and beams. Stopping leaks before they start is the best way to ensure your home stays safe from a water disaster. In this month's newsletter, we offer you some of the best ways you can protect your most important asset, your home.

Sincerely,

Susie and Nichola
"After looking at six different communities, we settled on HSV. Susie spent half a day showing us homes even though we were six months away from our planned move. As she got a feel for what our needs and desires were, the perfect home for us popped up a few weeks later. Susie arranged a video tour and in 24 hours we had a contract. She walked us through every phase of the closing, and we are now delighted owners of a home in HSV! Susie did a super job!"

It is important to maintain and understand your plumbing systems. Here are some helpful tips to always keep in mind.

  1. Know the location of the main water shut off valve in your home.
  2. Do a yearly inspection of your appliance hoses and faucets.
  3. Inspect showers and tubs.
  4. Check heating and plumbing pipes.
  5. When away on vacation, shut off the water supply to the washing machine.
  6. Install an emergency pressure release valve in your plumbing system.

Smart Surveillance - Assemble your team of watchers

While a lot of technology is nice, such as smart TVs and phones, the kinds of gadgets that alert you to a small problem before it becomes a big one are money well spent. These three sensors have your back 24/7.

Look Out For Leaks
Installed at the water main by a plumber, Phyn Plus monitors water use, so you now how many gallons each fixture uses. If it detects a leak - from a burst pipe or a washing machine hose - it shuts off the water main and sends you a text, so you can prevent flooding. $699; phyn.com

Find Power Vampires
Once hooked up to your breaker box by an electrician, Sense gets to work learning and naming everything that draws power. The app gives you a bird's-eye view of your electrical consumption by device, helping you identify vampire electricity use you might have missed, turning kilowatt-hours into dollars and cents. $299; sense.com

Prevent Frozen Pipes
Mount the Water Leak and Freeze Detector in the basement near pipes that might freeze, and the wireless thermometer will send you temperature notifications. To alert you before a leak becomes a flood, place its 4-foot-long sensor under a water heater or in the kitchen sink base cabinet. $80; honeywellhome.com
