Suicide Prevention

Awareness Month

Every September, Suicide Prevention Awareness Month reminds us that suicide is preventable and everyone can help save lives. With over 48,000 Americans dying by suicide annually—one death every 11 minutes—and suicide ranking as the second leading cause of death among young people aged 10-34, this observance raises crucial awareness about mental health support. The good news is that 94% of adults believe suicide can be prevented, and asking someone directly about suicidal thoughts can open the door to life-saving help rather than increasing risk.

We can all make a difference by learning warning signs, checking in on friends and family, and sharing resources like the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, available 24/7 for anyone in crisis. You don't need to be a mental health expert to help—sometimes just listening and showing someone they matter can save a life. This September, let's work together to reduce stigma, encourage open conversations about mental health, and create communities where everyone knows that help is always available.

National Recovery Month

Every September, National Recovery Month celebrates the millions of Americans in recovery from substance use and mental health conditions, while raising awareness that treatment works and recovery is possible for everyone. This observance highlights the incredible strength and resilience of individuals, families, and communities affected by addiction, emphasizing that recovery is not just about abstaining from substances but about building fulfilling, healthy lives. With over 20 million Americans currently in recovery from substance use disorders, Recovery Month breaks down stigma by sharing real stories of hope and transformation, promoting evidence-based treatment resources, and reminding us that addiction is a treatable medical condition, not a moral failing. Whether through treatment programs, peer support groups, medication-assisted treatment, or community resources, there are multiple pathways to recovery—and each person's journey deserves respect, support, and celebration.

Phone-Free School Days: What’s Working, What’s Not, and How to Fix It

This school year, millions of students are experiencing something new: policies that require phones, smartwatches, and other devices to be put away for the day.

The science is clear about why this matters. Phone-free schools improve students’ mental health, sharpen their learning, and strengthen their sense of belonging, while also reducing bullying. The benefits are being documented globally. In the Netherlands, a recent study compared schools before and after adopting away-for-the-day policies and found that the majority of students reported their social lives had improved.

Parents are noticing as well. In Screenagers: Elementary School Age Edition, a longtime Dutch teacher shared that he had never received so many thank-you notes from families as he did after his school adopted phone-free policies.

Teachers have been calling for this change for a long time. Jonathan Haidt, featured in both Screenagers: Growing Up in the Digital Age and Screenagers Elementary School Age Edition, has put it bluntly: “I hear from teachers every day who say they’re quitting because it’s just no fun anymore. You can’t get the kids’ attention.”

It is no wonder teachers, like parents, are celebrating. In Screenagers Next Chapter, a Washington principal recalls that when she announced the new rules, her staff literally cheered. Recent data reveals the level of teachers’ excitement.
