Spotlight On: Highlights of MCSAP's 2018
"We wanted to recognize our outstanding leaders and provide the time and space for all of our members to get to know each other a little better," said MCSAP Coordinator Kasaundra Brown. "It's been a privilege to know them and support their work."
Throughout the year, the coalition supported members' drug take-back events, safe disposal of medication, public service announcements, youth outreach, community events, and positive youth development.
MCSAP is also conducting a rigorous strategic planning process that’s incorporating members’ goals and needs into its work plan to ensure that the coalition is truly forward-thinking and member-led. It's also welcoming new members to the table as well as committed members to rise to leadership.
"We're excited about taking the coalition to the next level in 2019," Brown said. "We truly are stronger together."
At the meeting, the coalition singled out champions for special recognition.
Outstanding Leadership: Rachael Cooper of the National Safety Council.
Outstanding Leadership: Jody Rhodes of Neu-Life Community Development.
Outstanding Leadership: Raymond Rivera of United Community Center.
Longstanding Member: Tammy Molter, representing West Allis-West Milwaukee Community Coalition.
Also receiving recognition, but not in attendance, were Milwaukee Fire Department Deputy Chief Aaron Lipski as Coalition Champion and Melissa Ugland as Outstanding Community Ambassador.
After the business meeting concluded, members celebrated with a sparkling cider toast and treats by Palat Catering. The MCSAP coalition is looking forward to a busy and rewarding 2019!

Sometimes the Season is the Reason PSA
While the holidays are intended to be a joyful time, not everyone shares that festive spirit. To support those who may be at risk of abusing substances or struggling with their mental health this holiday season, Milwaukee County Substance Abuse Prevention (MCSAP) coalition created this public service announcement to remind all of us that we should "be known to someone." Please reach out to friends and family who may be feeling vulnerable at this time of year and let them know you care. If you need a helping hand, then a friend, relative, or a trained professional can be there for you. In addition, IMPACT 2-1-1 is always ready to connect our community members to services if necessary. Please share this video widely.

City-County Heroin, Opioid, and Cocaine Task Force Plan Released
Hours of testimony, public engagement, and research went into the
Milwaukee City-County Heroin, Opioid, and Cocaine Task Force’s Initial Plan for 2018-2022, which was released at the end of November. The local prevention community’s input must have been persuasive, because "Enhance and fund existing prevention programs to keep individuals from developing substance use disorder" is on the task force’s list of focus areas. We’re glad to see that that task force identifies substance use disorders as a public health issue "and therefore solutions must be framed through a public health lens."
