Naomi Nadreau Untitled (petrified), 2024 Crystallized salt, incense glazed ceramics burnout, powdered charcoal on Black Magic patina steel 31 x 10 x 10 in (image: Izzai Martinez Angulo)

Naomi Nadreau (they/she) is a sculptor working primarily with discarded man-made materials, ceramics, metals, and natural matter. Using the concept of estrangement in Science Fiction - making things familiar seem unfamiliar and the unfamiliar seem familiar - combined with acupuncture meridian lines in the body. Nadreau’s work highlights the slippage of reality. Nadreau reflects on their identity as an experience of being in a constant state of in-between and nowhere. They received their MFA in Visual Arts from University of California, San Diego and their MA from California State University Northridge. They have participated in exhibitions at Best Practice, San Diego; Espacio Negativo Gallery, Guadalajara; Pangee Gallery, Montreal; Phase Gallery, Los Angeles and co-curated at Vielmetter Greenhouse Gallery, Los Angeles.

Naomi is guided by Science Fiction, acupuncture, material, and process. Their sculptures dwell in curiosity and ambiguity, to alienate and estrange making the familiar seem unfamiliar and the unfamiliar seem familiar. Discarded materials, natural matter, ceramics, concrete, and metal are collected, repurposed, cut, fired, and assembled to undergo an alchemic process. Transforming an existing object, whether found in the trash or dug up from the ground, it no longer appears to be what it once was yet its previous presence lingers. These materials and drawings make it possible for an object to be in relation to its original form, the material surrounding it, and Naomi’s fiction. Acupuncture connects with their upbringing, treatments, drawing, and the invisible to be in relation with the body to objects, space, and materials. These objects aim to function through process and assembly in the slippage of our reality.

Hiroshi McDonald At the symposium, the ecstasy and immaculate truth (detail view) 2024 Alabaster under copper 12 x 12 x 6 in

Hiroshi McDonald is a sculptor and salt print artist working primarily on rock forms such as Alabaster, Calcite, including salt printing on 3d works and paper — a light sensitive process invented by William Talbot as a 19th century photographic technique. He received his MFA in Visual Arts from Bard College, NY (2014), attended Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine (2010), and holds a BFA from the Art Institute of Chicago (2003). He has exhibited throughout Asia, Europe and North America in various galleries and institutions, as well as in the Athens and Kyiv Biennials. McDonald grew up in Rancho Santa Fe, CA not far from the new Oolong Gallery space and finished his schooling at La Jolla Country Day.

Hiroshi makes work to explore material, chemistry, and force while guided by an instinctive trust in desire and a relentless questioning of rationality. Mori delves into the unique process of salt printing, where the interplay of water purity, temperature, pH, UV light concentration, and weather creates variations that mirror the diverse landscapes and moments captured through his lens. His artistic language extends beyond traditional boundaries, framed by his deep contemplation of the world. McDonald's work also draws inspiration from diverse cultural influences, ranging from the post-war artistic movements of Gutai and Bauhaus to ancient crafts and the concept of Japanese iitoko-dori (いいとこ取り), where contradiction is embraced to sustain incompatibilities.
