Naomi Nadreau (they/she) is a sculptor working primarily with discarded man-made materials, ceramics, metals, and natural matter. Using the concept of estrangement in Science Fiction - making things familiar seem unfamiliar and the unfamiliar seem familiar - combined with acupuncture meridian lines in the body. Nadreau’s work highlights the slippage of reality. Nadreau reflects on their identity as an experience of being in a constant state of in-between and nowhere. They received their MFA in Visual Arts from University of California, San Diego and their MA from California State University Northridge. They have participated in exhibitions at Best Practice, San Diego; Espacio Negativo Gallery, Guadalajara; Pangee Gallery, Montreal; Phase Gallery, Los Angeles and co-curated at Vielmetter Greenhouse Gallery, Los Angeles.
Naomi is guided by Science Fiction, acupuncture, material, and process. Their sculptures dwell in curiosity and ambiguity, to alienate and estrange making the familiar seem unfamiliar and the unfamiliar seem familiar. Discarded materials, natural matter, ceramics, concrete, and metal are collected, repurposed, cut, fired, and assembled to undergo an alchemic process. Transforming an existing object, whether found in the trash or dug up from the ground, it no longer appears to be what it once was yet its previous presence lingers. These materials and drawings make it possible for an object to be in relation to its original form, the material surrounding it, and Naomi’s fiction. Acupuncture connects with their upbringing, treatments, drawing, and the invisible to be in relation with the body to objects, space, and materials. These objects aim to function through process and assembly in the slippage of our reality.
