April 2020
Dear Friends:

I hope that this message finds you well. The Price Center remains committed to improving the quality of life for our community and we are working hard to leverage our expertise and help address the public health crisis at hand. For example, this month our Neighborhood Data for Social Change team launched the LA COVID-19 Neighborhood Maps tool to try to make the data we have on this virus more accessible. You can take a closer look at this new tool below.

There is still so much more to do and we remain eager to continue collaborating with our partners to help our community, particularly our neighbors who are most at-risk. I welcome your thoughts, ideas, and questions and can be reached directly at  gpainter@usc.edu  if you would like to connect.

Best,

Gary

NDSC Launches COVID-19 Data Map
for LA County

In order to help our community better understand where cases of COVID-19 exist within Los Angeles County, as well as the underlying vulnerabilities faced by Los Angeles residents, the USC Price Center for Social Innovation has created the  NDSC COVID-19 Map  within the Neighborhood Data for Social Change platform.

The COVID-19 map can be accessed through the  Neighborhood Data for Social Change platform . Using data from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, the site currently shows confirmed cases of COVID-19 across the County, as well as within specific communities in the City of Los Angeles. Additionally, the site features data on various indicators of vulnerability, including the rate of uninsured populations, poverty rates, asthma rates, and the percentage of residents over 65 – key vulnerabilities that can exacerbate the effects of COVID-19. These data are sourced from the American Community Survey and the CalEnviroScreen.

The NDSC COVID-19 Map will be updated on a daily basis, to reflect current data published by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

Visit  la.myneighborhooddata.org/covid-19  to view the map, and follow the Neighborhood Data for Social Change  @NDSC_LA.
We also congratulate Ph.D. candidate and Price Center Doctoral Research Assistant Soledad De Gregorio for completing her dissertation! Her research focuses on education policies drawing on quantitative methods to evaluate programs that affect student learning.
NEWS FROM NDSC
You can now explore even more information about the Los Angeles community on the NDSC portal. We recently added stops and calls for service (LAPD). This includes the vehicle stop rate, pedestrian stop rate, total stop rate, and stops by race. This week we will be adding data on arrests, including the total arrest rate, juvenile arrest rate, and arrests by race (LAPD only). In May we will add additional crime data including violent crime rate, property crime rate, and crime rate.
NDSC Community Training: Now Online

The Neighborhood Data for Social Change (NDSC) platform is a user-friendly digital tool that provides access to reliable, aggregated data at the neighborhood level. NDSC research staff host free monthly trainings to the public. In the span of just one hour, participants learn how to access data for specific neighborhoods and cities within Los Angeles County, understand why specific data sets are important, and conceptualize data stories to better tell the stories of their communities.

Trainings are held on the 3rd Wednesday of every month. The next training will be held on May 20th from 12:00-1:00 over Zoom.
