Dr. Christine Beckman, Price Family Chair in Social Innovation, Gives Talks on Social Innovation
Dr. Christine Beckman, Price Family Chair in Social Innovation and Professor at the USC Price School of Public Policy, will give two talks on new social innovation research. Dr. Beckman will present research
titled
"Unpacking board diversity: Women director experience and corporate social responsibility"
at
INSEAD
and the
Frankfurt School in Germany
. An abstract of the work is noted below.
Abstract:
The impact of gender board diversity on firm-level behavior has been the object of many studies but the mechanisms underlying a diversity effect have been rarely studied. We focus on research demonstrating that firms with female board members engage in more social and ethical practices to begin to unpack
why
female board members are important to firm-level behaviors. In particular, we explore how the unique and diverse experiences of female board members influence firm-level CSR behaviors. Using a sample of S&P 1500 firms, and a hand-collected database on the backgrounds of over 2,000 female board members over a 19 year period, we find that diverse functional experience and the advanced and elite educational backgrounds of female board members drive the positive association between board composition and firm-level CSR. We address the robustness of these effects given endogeneity concerns with a matched-pair analysis. Our findings support extending the important research on demographics to include deep-level differences in board member experiences, especially as the demographics of board composition shift toward more diverse representation.

The California Department of Public Health reported in
2017
that completing a formal education is a crucial step on the pathway to securing fulfilling employment that can provide food, housing, transportation and other livelihood improvements essential to a healthy life. However, educational attainment differs across economic and racial lines.
These differences are not a predetermined fate for certain groups of students. Instead, they are indicative of systemic problems in the public education system that can be addressed given the right approach. This data story, written in collaboration with
Orenda Education
and
Think Together
, highlights work that these organizations have undertaken in partnership with school districts in Los Angeles to address educational equity.
