To the members & friends of First Presbyterian Church of Glen Cove:
We have so many exciting events coming up this month as we celebrate summer, our community, and Pride Month.
This Friday, we'll gather in the Parish Hall at 7 pm to watch the Purple Documentary and then discuss what it means for us to have conversations about tough topics across political divides. Rev. Emmie and I will be facilitating that evening together.
The following Friday, June 10th, we'll gather in the Parish Hall once more at 7 pm for our Pride Social Hour. This is open to all LGBTQ+ folks and allies regardless of church affiliation. We'll have an evening of yummy treats (including cupcakes), drinks, and conversation. This will also be a chance to get to know our guest preacher, Rev. Marian Edmonds-Allen, who does incredible bridge-building work with Parity. She'll then be preaching for us on Sunday, June 12th, and Tori will be our organist for the day.
Then, the following Sunday, June 19th, we'll continue our Pride Celebrations with Drag Theologian and Union Seminary graduate Marge Erin Johnson. I know that some of you may be unfamiliar with drag. In a nutshell, it is a queer art form that involves extravagant clothing, dancing, and lip-syncing (it's one of those things you have to see to get it). You may say, "Why would we have this at church?" And perhaps a better question is, "Why would we not?!?!" This is a great outreach opportunity for our church to curate a space for those who may feel uncomfortable coming to church on a typical Sunday but are interested in drag culture. It's also an important educational opportunity for us as a church to better understand queer culture and how we can embrace our LGBTQ+ siblings. We'll close out Pride month with Rev. Emmie preaching. And don't forget that we're switching up our Seekers' Hour over the Summer to meet at the Manse over a few different evenings between now and September. We'll listen to a different podcast each time we gather and then discuss it. Our first one will be Wednesday, June 8th. The doors will open at 6:45 pm and we'll start the podcast at 7 pm. Feel free to bring a snack or drink to share (but this is not a requirement to attend!).
See you soon!
Peace,
