Sunday, June 26 ~ Graduation Sunday and Pride Sunday ~ " The Least of These"
LGBTQ people have often been seen by the larger society as “the least of these.” We have been distrusted, maligned, and scorned even by (and especially by) many churches. The good news is that Jesus says that the love and care that any of us gives unto the least of these, the members of His family, is the way we directly love and care for Jesus. Because this church welcomes and affirms LGBTQ people, we are able to experience the love of God among us. This is something worth celebrating!

Reflection of the Week from the Racial Justice Team
|
Great nations do not ignore their most painful moments — they face them. We grow stronger as a country when we honestly confront our past injustices, including the profound suffering and injustice wrought by slavery and generations of segregation and discrimination against Black Americans. To heal, we must remember. We must never rest until the promise of our Nation is made real for all Americans. The emancipation of enslaved Black Americans was not the end of our Nation’s work to deliver on the promise of equality — it was only the beginning.

Summer Series to Focus on Environmental Justice
|
“[The case] was about the systematic negligence of an American industry and the consequences of a poorly managed money grab foisted on a vulnerable community. It was the story of so many manmade environmental disasters across the country … and of their mostly Black victims. In North Carolina, their land had been handed down from freed ancestors only to be ravaged by the powers that be.”
And what does environmental justice have to do with our church? This year’s RUCC Summer Series will explore creation justice, which incorporates environmental justice and has been described as “[the] commitment to not only heal, tend, and restore God's creation, but to ensure the protection of God's planet and God's people from exploitation, as well as provision for the remediation of the damage that has been done” (Shantha Ready Alonso and Brooks Berndt: “What is Creation Justice?” https://www.creationjustice.org/blog/what-is-creation-justice )

Here is a brief summary of action and discussions at the June 21 Board Meeting:
-
Motion from Stewards to hire a consultant to help RUCC apply for the Employee Retention Credit (ERC) being offered by the IRS was approved.
- Discussion of securing our church building: This is potentially a serious safety issue and is being addressed in ways that we hope will not diminish our welcoming all who visit or attend services and activities.
- Discussion of RUCC Bylaws modifications. An ad hoc committee will be formed to work on this. Stay tuned for more details.
- Our next Quarterly Gathering is Sunday, July 24, 2022 following worship.
- There will be no August Board meeting - this is the first "summer break" the Board has taken since March 2020.
