Primary Care Update on COVID-19
April 10, 2020
If you received this from a colleague and wish to receive updates directly
COVID-19 Symptom Management/Input Health

  • 14 Elgin MD/NPs have registered for Input Health so far - if you haven't, please email  [email protected] and indicate you are from Elgin with your email address and cell phone number. If you have already signed up but want some more support to get started, email [email protected]. This will reduce call volumes to your office and will ensure you are using the most up to date screening questions and advice.
  • The public launch will be on Tuesday April 14. Ideally all primary care providers will be signed up by then.
  • A very brief 5 minute overview of the MD/NP end of the tool is here https://vimeo.com/404720827
  • If you have patients or health care workers inquiring about possible COVID-19 symptoms that need to be swabbed, please direct them to this tool: covid19checkup.ca
  • Until an assessment centre is set up (possibly later this week) if you have a patient or health care worker you believe needs to be swabbed as per the current testing guidelines and you do not have swabs or adequate PPE to do this, call ER Charge Nurse at 519-637- 3266 x3247 to send the patient over.
  • Patients can look up their own COVID-19 results here: https://covid19results.ehealthontario.ca: 4443/agree. However, you still need to follow these up with the patient, as per any test result. Allowing them to look up their own result may reduce calls to your office asking if results are back yet.
  • If you are looking for COVID-19 results on a patient and haven't been copied, you can find them in clinical connect:

If you are a physician and are interested in lending a helping hand to other institutions or care sectors during the crisis (while continuing to meet your local community needs of course), consider signing up to BookJane. The app is underwritten by the OMA (thus no cost to you) and allows you to mark availability and match to shifts in the area that you are interested in picking up.

Clinical Information

  • Prescription Renewals: All pharmacists are currently directed to fill 30 day supply only. Here's a message you could use with your patients to help explain this: "I renewed your usual 3 months of medication but your pharmacist is only allowed to give you 30 days right now to ensure there is enough for everyone. The refills will be there when you need them and they will give you more when they are able to."

  • Sanitizing/Cleaning Your Office Space: The American Chemistry Council's Center for Biocide Chemistries has compiled a list of suitable cleaning products that can be used during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Message from STEGH re: Immunizations

In order to offer our mutual patients the best possible protection from respiratory disease during these challenging times, St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital has been reviewing currently admitted patients on a case-by-case basis with the aim of administering both pneumococcal and
influenza vaccinations where appropriate. To limit duplicate vaccinations, we will be requesting information via a faxable form. Please have your staff fill in vaccination dates and fax back. They will in turn send you back notification that your patient was immunized when in hospital so you can keep your records updated.

If you wish to reach a specialist for a phone consult or advice, call 519-637-3236, press 0 for switchboard and ask for the specialty on call. Remember you and the specialist can bill for telephone consults (even before COVID-19!)

For Any Health Care Providers:
  • From the Psychologist's Association. “If a front line health service provider would like to contact a psychologist, they can go to English: https://cpa.ca/corona-virus/psychservices/ or French: https://cpa.ca/fr/corona-virus/psychservices/ where they will find a listing of psychologists who have volunteered to provide psychological services to them at no charge. The listing of psychologists is organized into province and territory. It is important that the provider chooses a psychologist who is on the list in the province or territory in which the provider is located. The psychologists on the listing have agreed to return calls for requests for service within 24 hours of their receipt.”
