Declassified documents outlining the causes and the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster have been digitized and are available online through East View.

The Chernobyl Files collection contains reports prepared for and by a variety of Russian and Ukrainian government agencies, including the KGB, that document and detail the most important developments in the wake of the disaster, as well as internal reports and investigations on its various causes.

This is a note from Ukrainian KGB officers who were in charge of handling Steven Strasser, a Newsweek reporter, who went to Kiev to write about the Chernobyl disaster. 
"As a result of measures conducted, the foreigner didn’t get any sensitive information from Soviet citizens. We succeeded in limiting Strasser's contacts, keeping him close to our sources.”
