ON 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF PRESIDENT LINCOLN'S ASSASSINATION, KILLER'S TRAIL RUNS THRU SURRATT
Surratt House Museum presents popular Booth Escape Route Tours throughout the month...
April 14 marks the 150th anniversary of the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. Uniquely connected to one of the greatest crimes of the 19th century is the Surratt House in Clinton.

After the fatal shooting of President Lincoln at Ford's Theatre in 1865, assassin John Wilkes Booth fled into Maryland, stopping at Surratt House & Tavern to retrieve a cache of weapons and supplies that had been hidden there earlier.

Surmised by federal authorities to be party to the plot (a claim she vehemently denied), house/tavern owner Mary Surratt would be arrested, tried, and convicted of conspiracy. In a monumental and highly controversial case (which inspired the Robert Redford-directed film "The Conspirator"), she became the first woman to be executed by the United States government.

Throughout the month, the Surratt House Museum will present it's John Wilkes Booth Escape Route Tours on consecutive Saturdays (April 11, 18, 25 & May 2). These day-long, fully-narrated bus tours take you on a scenic, historical and fascinating journey along the escape route of an assassin - from Ford's Theatre in DC to Booth's death by gunfire near Port Royal, VA.

HOTEL ALONG LANHAM/GREENBELT/GLENN DALE CORRIDOR FINALLY MOVING TOWARD COMPLETION
Staybridge Suites at Eastgate Shopping Center set to open early fall...
Quick update on a long awaited hotel that's been on the books for quite awhile - say pre-2007. The Staybridge Suites Lanham-Greenbelt at Eastgate Shopping Center is again under construction and finally moving toward completion. Located at the shopping center's far west side directly off Lanham-Severn Road, the 4-story, 122 room prop has been on a treadmill for several years (due to the stalled economy and other factors). There were starts, stops, re-starts and lengthy bouts of construction inactivity.

Now, crews have been working delegently over the past 8 months to get the prop in gear. Exterior is nearly complete and interior work is underway. Projected opening date is September 2015. We'll keep you posted.

ICONIC THEATRE RENNO ALMOST DONE, SET TO RE-OPEN THIS MONTH AS CENTERPIECE OF HISTORIC G-TOWN
The Old Greenbelt Theatre will bring an exciting mix of visual programming to the area...

Historic Old Greenbelt is one of only three Roosevelt New Deal Era "Greentowns" in the country. And, its famed Greenbelt Theatre is one of the few surviving film houses of a bygone era. The first screening took place on September 21, 1938, was Little Miss Broadway, a musical drama starring Shirley Temple.

The theatre is currently completing the final phase of renovations and is preparing to re-open this month. A soft opening is scheduled for mid-April with a Grand Opening in May. Now operated by the Friends of Greenbelt Theatre group, the film house will specialize in offering independent, art house, repertory, and educational programing.

MARLBOROUGH DAY FESTIVAL OFFICIALLY UNPLUGGED FOR 2015
Organizers of the annual town fest doubtful of return in its current form...
It has been a consistent item our county events calendar for decades, but its time appears to be at an end.

According to recent announcements, there will not be a 38th Marlborough Day Festival for 2015. Organizers have decided to pull the plug on this year's event, which is normally held the Saturday after Mother's Day.
