SWEET MAIN STREET: CITY OF LAUREL GETS STATE DESIGNATION
|
|
Laurel and its "Main Street" are the first to receive this important designation in Prince George's County...
Prince George's County now has an official MAIN STREET.
In conjunction with the celebration of the state's 20th anniversary of
MAIN STREET MARYLAND
last fall, the program announced two new designated communities - the Town of New Market in Frederick County...and the
CITY OF LAUREL
in Prince George's County.
The City of Laurel is the first designated Maryland Main Street in PGC. Main Street Maryland has now designated 30 communities statewide, supporting the locally-owned shops and restaurants, exciting events and festivals, and a variety of activities that provide an authentic Maryland experience for residents and visitors.
Created in 1998 and managed by the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development, the Main Street Maryland program builds partnerships with local governments, nonprofits, and businesses to strengthen the economic development potential in Maryland's historic downtown districts and neighborhoods.
According to Leigha Steele, Laurel's Economic Development Coordinator, "the Main Street Maryland program will provide additional assistance for the City of Laurel to continue revitalization efforts and meet the potential of our Main Street. The program will provide more support for our business owners, streetscape improvements; as well as create a more walkable and lively downtown area for all to enjoy!"

PROP ALERT: NEWLY OPENED COURTYARD AT MELFORD ONE OF THREE PROPOSED HOTELS
|
|
New 144-room extended-stay property is the first of three Marriott props envisioned for the Bowie development...
Bowie - Prince George's County's largest municipality - welcomed a new hotel franchise last month.
The five-story, 144-room hotel features an indoor swimming pool, fitness center and guest laundry, and offers four meeting rooms with 2,200 square feet of meeting space to accommodate functions of up to 350 people.
It also features the brand's latest lobby design, where guests can enjoy an open and modern environment outside of their rooms. The newly designed Bistro is the epicenter of the lobby, which fosters social connections and collaboration with more flexible and informal seating options. The Bistro offers guests a wide variety of "made to order" breakfast and dinner items, "grab and go" options, and also features an array of cocktails, beer and wine for guests to unwind at the end of the day.
The Courtyard at Melford is developed, owned and managed by Hospitality Development Company III, LLC. The company has plans to build two additional Marriott properties at Melford as well - a 125-suite Residence Inn and a 100-suite Spring Hill Suites. The timeline for the construction of these related properties has yet to be confirmed.

DINERS' CHOICE: NUMBER OF PGC DINES MAKE THE YEAR-END "OPENTABLE" LIST
|
|
The list continues to grow as the number of Prince George's restaurants become area favorites...
Diners have spoken, solidifying the fact that the PGC dine scene is satisfying many an appetite. A number of PGC restaurants made
OpenTable's
year-end "Best Restaurants" list for the Maryland burbs and Washington, DC DMV.
The "Best Restaurants" list is generated solely from diner reviews collected between
November 1, 2017
, and
October 31, 2018
. All restaurants with a minimum "overall" score and number of qualifying reviews were included for consideration. Qualifying restaurants were then sorted according to a score calculated from each restaurant's average rating in the "overall" category.
Here are the Prince George's County dines among the best in the area. In parenthesis (for select restaurants) is the added signature designation:

TAKING NOTICE: PGC'S CRAFT BEER, WINE & SPIRITS SECTOR CONTINUES TO BLOSSOM
|
|
Starting with the debut of Franklins in Hyattsville, Prince George's has been a positive pour in the craft beverage scene...
A premiere destination needs a premiere beverage (or two) and Prince George's County has that covered. From the finest in craft beer to award-winning wines (along the
LEGACY WINE TRAIL in Brandywine), it's all available in PGC.
Didn't happen overnight though, and it didn't happen by accident. The epicenter being Hyattsville and the commitment of pioneer brewer/restauranteur Mike Franklin and family to bring an award-winning, authentic craft beer & dining experience to Prince George's.

THE BIG SCORE: UMD ADDS ANOTHER MEN'S SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP TO THE TROPHY CASE
|
|
Unique travel website that provides travel writer recommendations and itineraries does a feature on College Park...
Last month, in what can be described as a championship slug-fest, UMD took out the University of Akron on a penalty kick to win 1-0.
The victory propelled the Terps to their fourth national title in program history. It is also the third championship under head coach Sasho Cirovski, who previously led UMD to triumphs in 2005 and 2008.
Congrats to the Terps...Champions yet again!
