SWEET MAIN STREET: CITY OF LAUREL GETS STATE DESIGNATION
Laurel and its "Main Street" are the first to receive this important designation in Prince George's County...
Prince George's County now has an official MAIN STREET.
In conjunction with the celebration of the state's 20th anniversary of MAIN STREET MARYLAND last fall, the program announced two new designated communities - the Town of New Market in Frederick County...and the CITY OF LAUREL in Prince George's County.
The City of Laurel is the first designated Maryland Main Street in PGC. Main Street Maryland has now designated 30 communities statewide, supporting the locally-owned shops and restaurants, exciting events and festivals, and a variety of activities that provide an authentic Maryland experience for residents and visitors.
Created in 1998 and managed by the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development, the Main Street Maryland program builds partnerships with local governments, nonprofits, and businesses to strengthen the economic development potential in Maryland's historic downtown districts and neighborhoods.
According to Leigha Steele, Laurel's Economic Development Coordinator, "the Main Street Maryland program will provide additional assistance for the City of Laurel to continue revitalization efforts and meet the potential of our Main Street. The program will provide more support for our business owners, streetscape improvements; as well as create a more walkable and lively downtown area for all to enjoy!"

WINTER EATS: FOUR PGC FINE DINES TAKE PART IN METRO WASH RESTAURANT WEEK
Fish, M&S, Osteria Costa, and Voltaggio Bros. join the DMV foodie frenzy that kicks off the 2019 dine season...
This year's winter
METROPOLITAN WASHINGTON RESTAURANT WEEK (MWRW) runs January 14-20. The annual DC-centric event includes over 200 restaurants throughout Washington DC - as well as suburban Maryland and Northern Virginia.
Throughout the promotion, MWRW restaurants will be offering three-course, prix fixe meals for brunch, lunch and dinner. The tab for brunch/lunch is priced at $22 and dinner at $35 over the seven day promotion.
The five-story, 144-room hotel features an indoor swimming pool, fitness center and guest laundry, and offers four meeting rooms with 2,200 square feet of meeting space to accommodate functions of up to 350 people.
It also features the brand's latest lobby design, where guests can enjoy an open and modern environment outside of their rooms. The newly designed Bistro is the epicenter of the lobby, which fosters social connections and collaboration with more flexible and informal seating options. The Bistro offers guests a wide variety of "made to order" breakfast and dinner items, "grab and go" options, and also features an array of cocktails, beer and wine for guests to unwind at the end of the day.
The Courtyard at Melford is developed, owned and managed by Hospitality Development Company III, LLC. The company has plans to build two additional Marriott properties at Melford as well - a 125-suite Residence Inn and a 100-suite Spring Hill Suites. The timeline for the construction of these related properties has yet to be confirmed.
DINERS' CHOICE: NUMBER OF PGC DINES MAKE THE YEAR-END "OPENTABLE" LIST
The list continues to grow as the number of Prince George's restaurants become area favorites...
Diners have spoken, solidifying the fact that the PGC dine scene is satisfying many an appetite. A number of PGC restaurants made OpenTable's year-end "Best Restaurants" list for the Maryland burbs and Washington, DC DMV.
The "Best Restaurants" list is generated solely from diner reviews collected between
November 1, 2017
October 31, 2018
. All restaurants with a minimum "overall" score and number of qualifying reviews were included for consideration. Qualifying restaurants were then sorted according to a score calculated from each restaurant's average rating in the "overall" category.
Here are the Prince George's County dines among the best in the area. In parenthesis (for select restaurants) is the added signature designation:
DINERS CHOICE - BEST OF THE WASHINGTON, DC AREA/MARYLAND
Grace's Mandarin/National Harbor (Asian)
Succotash/National Harbor (Most Booked)
Rosa Mexicana/National Harbor (Scenic View)
Bond 45/National Harbor
Old Maryland Grill/THE HOTEL @ UMD, College Park (Great for Lunch)
PROP ALERT: NORTHERN COUNTY CONTINUES GROWTH WITH NEW TOWNEPLACE CP
Now open, the new TownePlace Suites College Park adds another option to the robust northern corridor...
The new TOWNEPLACE SUITES BY MARRIOTT in College Park is now open. Located at 9620 Baltimore Avenue, it is positioned just off the Capital Beltway (495) and I-95.
The 77-room, all-suites hotel is less than two miles from the University of Maryland, and provides guests easy access to the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, FedEx Field, and downtown Washington, DC.
Hotel amenities include complimentary hot breakfast every morning in the lobby area, an exercise room, laundry facilities, complimentary Wi-Fi throughout the hotel and on-site business services, including copying, faxing and printing. The property is also pet-friendly (fees may apply).
Starting with the debut of Franklins in Hyattsville, Prince George's has been a positive pour in the craft beverage scene...
A premiere destination needs a premiere beverage (or two) and Prince George's County has that covered. From the finest in craft beer to award-winning wines (along the
LEGACY WINE TRAIL in Brandywine), it's all available in PGC.
Didn't happen overnight though, and it didn't happen by accident. The epicenter being Hyattsville and the commitment of pioneer brewer/restauranteur Mike Franklin and family to bring an award-winning, authentic craft beer & dining experience to Prince George's.
Last month, in what can be described as a championship slug-fest, UMD took out the University of Akron on a penalty kick to win 1-0.
The victory propelled the Terps to their fourth national title in program history. It is also the third championship under head coach Sasho Cirovski, who previously led UMD to triumphs in 2005 and 2008.
