SAILING: MGM DRIVES DC/B'MORE REGION TO 4TH IN U.S. NATIONAL GAMING MARKETS
DC/Baltimore moves to #4 in national gaming based on the escalating strength of MGM National Harbor...
Numbers don't lie homie! There's positive push from the big carrier on the Potomac.

Because of MGM NATIONAL HARBOR, Maryland had the largest year-over-year increase (+34.2%) in gaming revenue for 2017 of any state.

Although not the largest haus in Merry-land, MGM has a firm grip as the state's #1 casino. It has tallied over a billion in gaming revenue since its December 2016 opening. AND, in doing so, has helped elevate the DC/Baltimore region in national gaming. As research shows, the region has risen to 4th place as a gaming market.  Las  Vegas is unabashedly #1, Atlantic City is #2, and Chicagoland is #3. Now...the DC/B'more area is #4, thanks to MGM.

Based specifically on geographic market, the DC/Baltimore territory is repped by four casinos - MGM National Harbor, Live! at Arundel Mills, Horseshoe in B'more, and Hollywood Casino in WV. In the recently-released American Gaming Association's 2018 SURVEY OF THE COMMERCIAL CASINO INDUSTRY, the presence of MGM helped propel the DC/Baltimore region year after year within the nation's commercial casino industry.

What does this all mean? That MGM is exceeding expectations, while still in its infancy. Its been operational less than 22 months.  The region ranked 6th in 2015 prior to the arrival of MGM. It moved to #5 in 2016, with the help of MGM's December-opening receipts.  In 2017, the DC/B'more region had a banner year with $1.61 billion in gross gaming receipts. MGM lead the regional charge, accounted for $608.6 million in gaming revenue. Maryland's #2 casino, Live! Casino & Hotel, accounted for $545 million.

IN A NUT SHELL: To put things in proper perspective, we must remember that MGM is the new kid on the block. If you were to exclude the juggernaut of big game casinos that is Vegas/Nevada-proper, MGM's rev ranks 3rd among the Top 20 commercial casinos in the US.

NATIONAL HONOR: SEPT 15, FIREFIGHTERS CLIMB FOR THOSE LOST ON 9/11
Annual climb at the Gaylord honors New York firefighters lost during 9/11, benefits survivors...
A climb worthy of every step. The  2018 NATIONAL CAPITAL REGION 9/11 MEMORIAL STAIR CLIMB & 5K WALK  will be held at National Harbor and the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center, September 15, 8 am-12:30 pm. Hosted by Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department, the Memorial Stair Climb brings together firefighters and the general public in a commemorative event to honor the 343 heroic members of the Fire Department of New York, who died on September 11, 2001.

Participants will climb the stairs of the 19-floor Gaylord National multiple times for a total of 110 stories, representing the number of floors in the World Trade Center's twin towers. All funds raised and registration fees will be directed to the NFFF to assist the surviving firefighters, as well as families and coworkers of those firefighters lost in the terrorist attacks of 9/11.

NAMED DESIRE: A "STREETCAR" ROLLS INTO PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY
The county's newest craft brew hub now open in Hyattsville, making it two in the Gateway Arts District...
To the delight of brew fans, PGC's second original brew house is in full gear. After a soft opening in August, STREETCAR 82 BREWING CO. will officially stage its Grand Opening Celebration Weekend, September 7-9.

Streetcar 82 is located in Hyattsville at  4824 Rhode Island Ave. It features the brewery, taproom, and includes Biergarten-style outdoor seating, cornhole, and life-size Jenga. It is also kid and dog friendly.

As part of the Gateway Arts District, it joins the county's original brewer and fan favorite, Franklins Restaurant, Brewery & General Store (at 5123 Baltimore Ave in Hyattsville).

WHAT'S IN A NAME? Streetcar 82 was started by two Gallaudet University graduates (who love craft beer and desire to create the very best). It is unique as the only deaf-owned brewery in the region. It takes its name from the historic District  82 Streetcar line which ran from DC through Prince George's County from 1888 until September 7, 1958. The line started at DC's 5th & G St and continued along to the PGC neighborhoods of Mt. Rainier, Brentwood, North Brentwood, Hyattsville, Riverdale Park, all the way to the Branchville area of College Park.

PGAAMCC provides a unique look at the history and significance of the African American community in Prince George's County and beyond...
Despite the fact that summer vacation is a distant memory and the kids are back at school (or on their way), OFFICIALLY - summer doesn't comes to a close until September 23.

So, it's never to late to get out and about, Experience Prince George's, and make the most of the final days of summer. Here's one other reason...

Last month NBC 4 listed the 15 UNSUNG MUSEUMS OF THE DC AREA YOU SHOULD CHECK OUT THIS SUMMER. Among the admirable bunch was the Prince George's African American Museum & Cultural Center (PGAAMCC) in North Brentwood.

CHEAP THRILLS: THREE PGC DINES MAKE BEST INEXPENSIVE FOODIE LIST
Group of local kids to speak directly with the International Space Station and Astronaut Ricky Arnold...
Each year, WASHINGTONIAN mag puts together a list of the best inexpensive dine spots across the DMV. They're the true, unique and unpretentious places that deliver outstanding taste and selection that won't cost you an arm and a leg - under 25 bucks per person.  Making this year's illustrious group of the 100 EAT GREAT CHEAP 2018 are these PGC delights:

5810 Greenbelt Rd, Greenbelt; 240.965.5821
You can never replicate an institution, but elements come close-at least in fla-vor and friendly wel-come-at the first Washington-area franchise of the legendary Tennessee fried-chicken joint (now with 20-plus locations). We're starstruck by the crackling pieces of white and dark meat, tinged ochre by spices that burn as slow as the classic soul playing in the background. Sides are bit players-decent collards, mac and cheese, slaw-though it's worth lingering for chocolate chess pie.
Also good: Fried green tomatoes; fried pickles; root-beer float.

7313 Baltimore Avenue, College Park; 240.714.4473
Some of our favorite burgers can be found at this mod cafe devoted to Shaanxi-style snacks and noodles. House-made rice-flour buns hold morsels of cumin-scented lamb, red-onion-studded pork, and five other fillings, and we'd be happy downing them all. Chili-flecked pea-nuts and skewers of grilled bean curd make a fitting prelude.
Also good: Skewers of lamb, pork, chicken, and beef; sesame dumplings; knife-cut noodles; cold skin noodles with vinegar and peanuts.

5020 Edmonston Road, Hyattsville; 301.277.4477
The mariachi-band figures on the roof let you know you're in for a fiesta. This taqueria, with 20 types of tacos, celebrates odd bits in particular. Our favorites are the tripe, tongue, and pork cheeks. But for peak pig, try the mixed pork-a fatty, chewy medley of parts-double-wrapped in corn tortillas. A separate counter near the entrance serves fresh juices and a can't-miss elote (Mexican street corn on the cob).
Also good: Pork-skin tacos; carnitas tacos; cactus tacos.

PROP ALERT: NEW HOTEL PENNED FOR WESTPHALIA MOVING FORWARD
Extended-stay hotel planned for Westphalia Town Center, one of two props on the books for WTC...
Plans are on the board and moving forward to bring a hotel - possible two -  to the 310-acre  WESTPHALIA TOWN CENTER in Upper Marlboro.

Originally proposed was a 150-room prop.  Now, that has morph into potentially two hotels, when the construction dust settles. According to a recent report, the Westphalia Development Corp. executed a letter of intent with a hotel developer/operator for a 100-room prop, with the option for a second 100-room hotel.

WTC is located on Pennsylvania Avenue, just east of Joint Base Andrews. Just 2 miles from the Beltway, WTC's includes 700 residential units and 500 sqft of retail that will include a multiplex cinema.
