From Ashes to Glory
“Dust you are and to dust you shall return.” Those are the words spoken as a mixture of ash and oil are placed on one’s forehead forming the shape of a cross on Ash Wednesday. These words echo back to the book of Genesis when God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils. Adam was placed into a garden where the tree of life was located in its midst. Man never had it so good.
You know the rest of the story, Adam and Eve disobeyed the Word of the LORD eating fruit from the forbidden tree, and all was lost. They were removed from the garden, away from the tree of life; death and decay were now brought into God’s once perfect creation. It is into this situation the words by God are spoken to Adam, “Dust you are and to dust you shall return.” There you have it; the consequences of sin – death.
Since that time, we have been born into bodies that break down, get old, get sick, ache, hurt, get diseases, fall down and get scraped, need surgeries, need medications, get wrinkles, loose hair, and eventually will return to the earth and become dust. If this is all there is to this life; it is short and it’s really downhill from the day we are born…the clock starts ticking.
Enter Jesus. God became a man to redeem that dust, to die for that dust, to raise that dust up to new and eternal life. God took on human dust so that dust may become holy and live. “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live” (John 11:25-26). Though we die, though we become dust again, yet that dust shall live. John goes on to write in his first letter, “Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is” (1 John 3:2).
When our Lord Jesus returns again, he will raise that dust up to new life in new a new body, one that will never decay, one that will never get sick, tired, diseased, or break down. It will be a body fit for eternity. We are not sure exactly what we will be or look like, but we know one thing, we shall be like him. Those promises are for you and for me. Let’s trust them, live in them, and find our lasting hope and joy because of them. For in Jesus, dust never had it so good.
