A Letter From Our Pastor

The Past and Future are Present

This statement may seem a little strange, but when you think about it, it is absolutely true. How can this be true, you may wonder? When you are God. God created time and space; God is outside of time and space, so he is everywhere at once, and the past, the present, and the future are simultaneously before him at once.
We are the ones who are stuck in space and time, not God. We think about the past, maybe even regret it or long for it back; we are consumed with the present, and we often worry or wonder about the uncertain future. Not God. He has time and space in his hands, and He has you in those hands as well.

This is truly our comfort as Christians who are “in Christ.” You and I are “in” the “alpha and omega…who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty” (Rev. 1:8). This is why the Apostle Paul can also write in Colossians 1:17 about Jesus, “and he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”
But this is not just a philosophical comfort we have as Christians believing God is bigger than us, always present with us, and is controlling the past, present and future.  Paul goes on to write in Colossians, “For in [Christ] all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross” (Col. 1:19-20).

So here’s the kicker…being in Christ, God looks at you through those eyes that are not bound by space and time. He sees you covered by Christ, reconciled by Christ, and having all the blessings of Christ, right now! This is why Paul can write of you and me in the past tense, about our future, even though we are still living in the present. Paul can write in Ephesians, “God…made us alive….you have been saved…[God has] raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus” (Eph. 2:4-6).

My dear friends, what a difference it makes when we enter into our day, our week, and the new year believing that the God who has all things in his hands has us as well. Those hands are nailed scared and pierced through for you and me, so that we can live these days in faith trusting that we are at peace with God and all his promises for us are as good as done. They are as certain and as good as done, as if God has made good on them right now; and in Christ, he has. So let’s commend our past, our present and our future in to God’s hands, and let’s live knowing we are in Christ’s hands. This is what it means to live in freedom, with hope, and in peace. It’s all yours, my friends, in Jesus.

 -Pastor Darrin Sheek
