A Letter from Pastor Sheek

Feasting or Starving?

1 Peter 2:2-3 - Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation 3 if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.

These verses from Peter are the opening lines to our epistle reading for this coming Sunday. Peter is giving us an image many of us are familiar with, the image of a newborn baby. The most vital need a newborn infant has is nutrients from a good source of food, their mother’s milk. Without food a baby will not mature and will eventually die. In short, this is exactly how it works with us. Our heavenly Father gives us the new birth of regeneration through the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The wonderful gift of faith brings forth new life by the life-giving Spirit of God. Word and Spirit work together to create the faith that gives us sinners a second birth, so now what?

This is Peter’s point, the “now what” is the same food that gave us life, and this food is what causes us to grow up; without it, our faith would be stunted and even die. This “spiritual food” is nothing less than the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ – God’s Word that gives what it promises, that is the power of His salvation, the Word that gives life, sustains life, and keeps us growing and maturing throughout life. Growing up or maturing is simply growing in faith that trusts the very promises of God found in our Lord Jesus Christ, and faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of Christ (Romans 10:17).

My dear church family, the Word of God is vital for us to grow in faith. Whatever we can do to put ourselves under His Word, to be fed His Word, to chew and digest His Word will, by necessity, cause us to grow up into salvation – we can’t help it, just like a newborn infant can’t help but grow when it is well fed. When we deprive ourselves of the richness of Gods’ Word, we shouldn’t expect anything less that stunted grow – faith is either being fed or being starved.

Let’s together feast on the riches of God’s Word together here at Prince of Peace. I thank God for the opportunity grow with you, side by side, as we feed on God’s Word together. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.
