A Letter From Our Pastor

Life in the Vine

“I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.”

What a picture! That’s what Jesus is painting for us; he’s giving us a mental picture of a growing vine that we can visualize. Even if we aren’t that familiar with grape vines, we can still picture a fruit tree or a vegetable plant that has a main trunk or a stem. From that main shoot extends branches and limbs that blossom with maturing fruit until ripe and ready to eat.

In a graphic way, Jesus is pointing all of us to look to him as our source of life and fruit. “Abide” in me, he says to us branches; in other words, stay connected to me and remain connected to me, if you want to have a life that bears the fruit of godliness. So how do we stay tapped into Jesus? How do we remain “in him?” As a branch draws its life from the main stem, so our faith must be nourished and kept alive through Christ, our vine. We stay connected or “tapped” into Jesus by keeping him as source and center of our faith. Branches are fed and strengthened through preaching and teaching the good news of Jesus, the who lived, died, and rose again that we might have forgiveness and life in His name. If you look to tap in anywhere else as a living branch, you will die. Simply put, Christ’s Word and Spirit are what give us life and keep us grafted into Jesus.

That’s why we do what we do here at Prince of Peace, in both our church, school and preschool. We strive to keep God’s Word and Jesus Christ the center and focus of who we are and what we do as His gathered branches. Our worship, our Sunday classes, our mid-week bible studies, and chapel services all deliver what is needed to cause us to remain connected to the vital source of our life and faith. So let us all continue to abide in our Lord Jesus; and as we do, together we will bear much fruit - that’s a promise.
