Dear Oyster Adams Families,
This Wednesday teachers will be preparing Term 3 virtual learning kits, you may notice a few changes to the day’s schedule. We ask that all families remind students to log in to CANVAS regardless of the asynchronous and schedule change to ensure that everyone is marked present and no one incurs an unnecessary absence. Please reach out to your teacher if you have any questions.
New! Reopening Update
Tigers are back in the buildings! We thank all the families who trusted us to teach and play with your children this week. In-person launch after nearly a year was an intense lift, and we couldn’t have done it without specific teams:
- Thank you the LSAT/ReOpening Corps for long hours in meetings advising the launch of term 3
- The OA leadership team: Rosa, Peter, Christina, Zaneta, Daniela, Katie and Iris
- The strategy and logistics team led by Zaneta: Keiry, Susana, Evelyn, Becky
- The custodian team also led by Zaneta: Mr. Moore, Mrs. Huntley, Mr. Jordan, Sr. Torres, Mr. Scott and Mr. Wooten
- Our nurses: Nurse Serge and Nurse Jackson
- The in-person learning team who were the first to launch with our students
- The virtual team for holding down the virtual fort and adjusting to staffing changes
We successfully served 80 students (PK-8) in person throughout this week and we are moving toward finalizing all rosters and closing offers in all 12 of our in-person classes.
New! The Mayor’s Robocall
Some families may have received a robocall last night from Mayor Bowser urging you to contact your school if your family is interested in returning for in-person learning. School leaders were not made aware of this call until after it went out and we believe this was intended for families at schools who have yet to fill in-person seats.
OA has systematically worked to fill our in-person learning seats for Term 3 using DCPS’ priority groups and their randomized waitlist and we will continue to make lottery offers if/when seats become available during this term. I am still planning on sharing finalized roster data at the Reopening/ LSAT meeting next week. Our plan is still for each grade level to receive an email when all seats have been filled in their respective grade. We anticipate many of these emails to be sent by today or Monday. We also hope to expand in-person learning opportunities for Term 4 if health and safety restrictions allow and once DCPS senior leadership has communicated a path forward for principals.
I do apologize that the Mayor’s call may have given hope to some families who have not received an offer for in-person learning.
New! Are there any seats left?
We are in the process of finalizing student rosters for IPL/CARE. As of 3 pm today,
-
Total seats that were available: 131 (not including 40 Pk for expeditionary learning)
- Total offers made: 299
-
105 of the seats have been accepted (35% acceptance rate)
- 168 of the seats have been declined
-
26 of the seats are still pending (Parents have 48 hours to decide, if all 26 parents accept, this will close all of our current classes.)
The following classes are now closed:
-
Kinder IPL with Sra. Ambrosio and Sra. Fuentes
-
1st grade IPL with Ms. Ventura and Mr. Smee
-
2nd grade CARES with Mr. White and Srta. Cairo
-
4th/5th combo CARES with Srta. Elvira
New! OA Celebrates BHM
February is Black History Month! Last year Mr. Benson took beautiful portraits of some of our Black/African American students and faculty at Adams to use in our celebrations. If your child attends Oyster or you are new to the community and want to include your portraits this year (we may use them in social media and they will be forwarded to the BHM parent co-chairs to use in the virtual activities they are planning with families) please add them to the album. You can add student portraits or family portraits.
See here for the BHM community events that are already being planned! More information to follow.
Topic: OA's Black History Month Cooking Class; it’s a family affair! We will create recipes from the African Diaspora. Our final product will be mouth-watering and photo-worthy. A professional chef will take us on a cultural culinary journey full of flavor and fun. When you register, you will be sent a list of necessary ingredients.
Time: Friday, Feb 19, 2021 05:30 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada)

Please submit pictures of your students learning virtually in the SY20-21 Yearbook Pictures Google folder, under the appropriate grade-level folder.

As we end Term 2, teachers and staff are gearing up for Term 3 to start next week. In preparation, we will be ordering Term 3 supplies kits, which will be available for pickup at your child’s school (Oyster: PK4-3rd, Adams: 4th-8th) from Tuesday, February 16-Friday, February 19. We will send out additional communication regarding Term 3 supplies pickup in the coming weeks.
