Ceremony #2 will begin at 1:00pm and include all graduates with last names that start with the letters M-Z.

All graduates should arrive 45 minutes ahead of their commencement ceremony starting time and report to the Fieldhouse to check in. Spectators will be able to enter the stadium 45 minutes prior to the ceremony start time and each spectator must present a ticket at their time of entry. Each graduate will be provided 2 tickets to their assigned ceremony.

More specific information regarding the following items will be coming out soon:
  • Ticket Distribution (Ticket Pickup Day)

Year End Conduct Expectations
Exit With Class
The Glenbard East Administration and faculty have always been very proud of our students and their behavior. We expect this outstanding behavior to continue. As a warning, any student who participates in year‐end pranks or vandalism will face serious consequences, which may include arrest, suspension, and non‐participation in graduation and/or other senior events.

We take pride in our school and pranks are unacceptable. Students have been reminded of these expectations throughout the year and most recently at our senior assembly a few weeks back.

The IHSA Sport Physical form cannot be accepted. Once your 9th grade student has submitted a physical examination and immunization record to the Health Office, and if they wish to participate in a sport, a separate sport’s physical will not be needed. The physical form for incoming students is available at www.glenbardeasths.org under the Parents tab click Health Services link. Students who are not in compliance by the first day of school will be unable to attend class.

Rules for Students Taking Medications at School

Students are not allowed to take prescription or nonprescription medications at school until their physician and parent/guardian complete and submit the School Medication Authorization Form to the School Nurse.

Congratulations to East Staffulty of the Month
Each month Glenbard East recognizes staff members based on her/his contributions to the school and alignment with Profile of an Educator competencies: Advocates, Empathizes, Embraces Diversity, Innovates, Thinks Critically, and Collaborates.

This month we are proud to recognize: Mike Souza, APO, and Betty Thermos, Special Education Classroom Aide. Here is what their colleagues had to say about them:
Mike Souza
Mike engages in dialogue to promote a positive school culture. He values mutual respect, inclusion and openness to differing perspectives. He demonstrates flexibility and seeks and applies differing viewpoints. He is open to exchange of ideas and values the experiences and differences of others . We are very fortunate that he has joined the Ram Team.
Betty Thermos
Mrs. Betty Thermos is one of the best Instructional Assistants Glenbard East has seen! Her calming demeanor, worldly experiences, and student-centered approaches truly engage students. Students respond to her in a different way than they do with their teachers. It's difficult to describe, but Mrs. Thermos brings such a balance! She embodies and models empathy, diversity, and collaboration in our classrooms on a daily basis. She models problem-solving and critical thinking skills simply in the way she participates and engages with our students. Mrs. Thermos is always so positive and uplifting. We are so lucky to have her!
Superintendent: Glenbard District 87 is Developing a Robust Summer Program
Superintendent,
Dr. David Larson
The effects of the pandemic have had an impact on everyone, none greater than our community's greatest investment: our students. This past year's journey has challenged and stretched each developing and maturing adolescent academically, socially and emotionally. Our talented teachers and staff have been flexible, resourceful and worked tirelessly to address each student's needs. Yet we know that regardless when the pandemic ends, we will need to provide comprehensive and customized support. A key aspect of this work under way is the development of a robust and authentic free summer school program, funded through the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Fund (ESSER II) program. Leveraging the summer months will be critical in normalizing each student's academic strength, daily routine, personal confidence, as well important peer and adult relationships.

Glenbard's annual summer school programming, typically attended by 2,400 students, includes credit recovery courses, bridge classes and credit courses to accelerate. Planning for this summer; however, is unique. We anticipate this summer to be our largest summer program ever, with more students enrolling at this link each day.

The following are key aspects that are being integrated into our planning:

  • We avoid phrases such as "learning loss," "student deficits" and "remedial needs" as these tend to label students negatively and erode their confidence. Statements centered on building a positive mindset will lead to a student's personal and academic success.
  • We have designed new enrichment courses to help students sharpen skills in argumentative writing and several levels of math.
  • Many of our courses are offered with both in-person and remote learning opportunities to maximize participation of all students.
  • Paramount, will be designed learning activities that are meaningful, authentic and challenging. Tedious tasks requiring redundant skill practice or rote memorization will not be effective and should be avoided.
  • Recognizing and honoring each student's perseverance and resilience as they have navigated through this difficult year will be a necessary foundational beginning point.
  • Assessing a student's strengths and abilities, along with growth areas, is important in building ownership of their academic success.
  • We will carefully assess what students need socially and emotionally, not just what is academically important. This often requires intentionally reaching out to parents and guardians to listen and understand.
  • We will structure effective individual and small group tutoring sessions, which will be interactive and student-centered.

Our teachers’ instruction focuses on the six qualities in our Profile of a Graduate that we want each of our graduates to have. These traits include:

  • Communicates
  • Collaborates
  • Thinks Critically
  • Embraces Diversity
  • Creates
  • Is Self-Empowered

The competency Is Self-Empowered states, “Students will employ a growth mindset that includes self-regulation, motivation, and resiliency”. The customized opportunities noted above will enable students to become more self-empowered and supported along the way.

Historically, previous generations have helped shape our great country through periods of hardship and difficulty, including the Great Depression, World War I, World War II, and the Civil Rights Era. I am confident that our amazing students, as we intentionally guide and support them in the coming months, will be our models of resiliency, perseverance and resolve. In addition to learning content, our students have gained critical skills, including communication, collaboration, grit and technology skills. I am confident in their abilities and optimistic about their future.
