Dear School of St. Mary Families,

Here we are back to school after a great Christmas Break.  Some families and teachers traveled south and have returned with sun-kissed tans; some families and teachers went north and skied; while other families and teachers stayed put to enjoy the quiet and recharge with a couple of weeks off.  Whatever it is that your family chose to do, we are all happy to be back together again to move strong in the direction of great learning here at the School of St. Mary.

Starting next week our students in 3 rd -8 th grades will be taking their practice ACT Aspire tests. ACT Aspire assesses student readiness in English, math, reading, science, and writing . The Interim assessments are designed to help educators better understand students' learning needs throughout the school year.    While these are just practice test, it is very important that your child arrives at school on time and has a good breakfast as testing will begin as soon as school starts.

The next regularly scheduled School Advisory Council meeting is Monday, January 14.  The meeting is at 6:45 pm and will be held in the Multi-Purpose Room of the Upper Grade Campus.  The Council is established to assist the Pastor and the Principal by providing advice and counsel particularly in the following areas: strategic planning; policy formulation; institutional advancement/development; financial planning/financial management; communication; and mission enhancement.
Our Parent Association's next meeting is Wednesday, January 16.  It will be held at 6:00 pm in the Multi-Purpose Room of the Upper Grade Campus.  Our PA supports the School of St. Mary's vision and mission, and serves to enhance the educational and social environment of the school through effective activities and communications designed to support academic and financial goals.  Best of all, every parent/guardian of a child at the School of St. Mary is a member of the PA. Come to the meeting and learn more about events and activities that are being planned.

Our first Coffee with the Principal for 2019 is scheduled for next Friday, January 18. The Coffee will be held from 9:00 - 10:00 am in the Library of the Upper Grade Center. The coffees rotate between both campuses.  I hope you find the time to drop in and discuss concerns as well as learn more about our school and staff.
Please join us for our annual celebration of National Catholic Schools Week, beginning on Sunday, January 27. This year's theme, Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed., highlights our focus on faith development, academic excellence and dedication to community service. We've planned a variety of events to show how we're doing this as a community at the School of St. Mary.  Look for more information in our Catholic Schools' Week agenda in the upcoming newsletters.

Counseling Corner
Dear Parents,
I hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
This year, we have a very exciting opportunity to pair with CROYA (Committee Representing Our Young Adults) to provide a Peer Leadership Group Program for our 7 th and 8 thgrade students. This program focuses on teaching students to be better friends and leaders as well as proving them the skills to handle difficult situations.
I will work alongside CROYA's Middle School Youth Worker, Leslie Walton, to implement this program. Our 7 th grade students will participate in this program during their Advisory class for the next eight weeks. Once 7 th grade has completed the program, 8 th grade will begin.  The 8 th grade program will mirror the 7 th grade one but will also incorporate skills aimed at preparing our students for challeging high school experiences.
For those of you who have not heard of CROYA, it is a community organization that addresses the social-emotional needs of the youth of Lake Forest and Lake Bluff. CROYA also provides a structured after-school program for grades 7-12 where students engage in alternate activities, develop leadership skills, and build self-confidence.
SOSM is very excited to be offering this exclusive program to our students; we look forward to seeing them engage in this wonderful opportunity.
Best wishes,
Kelsey Egan
