Aloha School of St. Mary Parents,

While the weather outside was a little overcast, it did not dampen the spirits of teachers and staff as they welcomed students back to school on Aloha Monday this past week. Dressed in their best Hawaiian shirts and mahalo leis, the School of St. Mary staff were outside greeting the children and their parents to begin the 2018–19 school year. Our students and staff said aloha (good bye) to summer vacation while saying aloha (hello) to new and returning friends and teachers as well as a brand new school year! It was a great start to what promises to be another outstanding new school year here at the School of St. Mary!
There have been several questions raised about drop-off and pick-up at the UGC. UGC morning drop off begins at 8:25 am. Please be aware that the playground is not supervised until that time. Drop-off prior to that time should be going to Extended Day.
Please enter the parking lot through the north entrance off of Oakwood. Proceed to the curb and pull all the way forward to the south end of the sidewalk toward the entrance to the school.
* For safety reasons, students should never be walking through the parking lot without a parent. All students should be dropped off in the indicated drop off area.

For pick up, please enter the parking lot off of Oakwood. Pull into a parking spot, and turn the car off. The children will be dismissed at 3:45 pm (12:15 pm on half days, 2:19 pm on early dismissal days). Parents may meet their child by the school building and walk them back to the car, or please let your child know where you will be parked and have them meet you at the car.

Please do not start exiting the parking lot until the teachers on duty have indicated it is time to do so.  Faculty will be standing at the exit on the south side of the lot, and will wave to inform parents that all vehicles may exit the parking lot. This may take a little while, so try to be patient and courteous, as we are working to ensure that dismissal runs smoothly and safely.

During after school pick-up at the UGC, please do not pick-up children along Oakwood, as opposed to inside our school parking lot. This encourages the students to cross the street at the busiest time of the day, with cars coming and going in both directions on Oakwood. This is putting our students at risk. The safest practice is to pull into and park in our school parking lot. We prefer that you park in the school parking lot for pick-up. If you must park in the street, we ask that you please walk across the street to the school lot and personally walk your child to your car. Thank you for your cooperation.

The Wall Street Journal recently ran an article on volunteerism at schools. Fewer parents are volunteering at their children’s schools just as new research shows it yields benefits from better grades to lower rates of depression.  Read the full story here.

Speaking of volunteers, our first School Advisory Council (SAC) meeting of the year is scheduled for Monday, September 10 th at 6:45 pm in the UGC Multi-Purpose Room (MPR). Our SAC is a group of discerned parents and parishioners who are dedicated to the welfare and promotion of our school. Their function is to serve as an advisory board for the operation and management of the School of St. Mary. Among their many functions:
  • Provide an opportunity for parents, alumni and parishioners to offer their experience and expertise in the service of others.
  • Develop shared ownership of the school and foster long term viability and sustainability.
  • Offer financial advice and fiscal best practices.
  • Develop/recommend new and necessary school policy when requested to do so.
  • Provide a vehicle for public relations in the parish and larger community.
  • Enable clergy and school administration to concentrate on other duties.
  • Allow parents a voice in their child’s education.
  • Encourage the school’s continuous improvement and strategic planning.

Meetings are open to parents and parishioners. We are looking for new members to join us!

Kiddos Catering will begin serving hot lunches on Tuesday, September 4 th . For more information about Kiddos Catering , please visit Please place students’ order by August 29 th for the 1 st order in September.

We are looking for two positions at the UGC:
  • A teachers’ aide to help with both of our 4th grade classes. This would be a full-time position but does not include benefits.
  • A part-time receptionist at the front desk of the UGC. This would be approximately 5 days a week, approximately 4 hours a day.

If interested or you would like to learn more, please contact me.

In closing, Mahalo! Mahalo means “thank you” in Hawaiian. Thank you once again for choosing the School of St. Mary to partner with as we work to educate and prepare our students for their future. More than preparing your child for academic success in the classroom, a Catholic education lays the foundation for a faith-filled and purposeful life. Because our Catholic faith is woven throughout every part of the school day, you can be sure that the values you teach at home are being nurtured and supported here. We are truly teaching life lessons!

Ke Akua pü (God be with you)
