Tennis:
FUHS had a rough match against Troy High School on Tuesday. Although the team fought hard throughout the contest, the team ultimately fell short losing 8-10. #1 and #2 singles, Abigial Kelly and Kate Luengo scored two points for the team. Abigail showed a lot of heart playing Troy's number one to a standstill but losing a close match, 4-6. But Coach Inthavong knows Abigail will learn from this and work harder than ever and will have a more favorable outcome the next time the team meets Troy again in a couple of weeks.
The doubles teams kept the match close, winning 6 of 9 sets played. #2 doubles team of Nicole White and Bonnie Lynch had a rough start to the day, losing their first match to Troy's #2 (2-6). But after a talk with coach, they rebounded in a very positive manner, winning against Troy's #1 and #3 (6-3, 6-4), they still have a lot of work to do for the rest of the season, but this was a great recovery. The #3 doubles team of Francine Bondoc and Amber Elimino also did well, winning 2 of 3 sets (6-2, 3-6, 6-3). #1 doubles of Christina Sfatcu and Rebecca Balarie won 2 of 3 sets (6-4, 4-6, 6-1). This ends their fantastic and amazing run of 77 straight matches won. Christina and Rebecca were visibly upset from the loss, but Coach Akhom expressed his pride and was very thankful for having the opportunity to coach them and to be a part of their journey. 77 wins in a row in any sport is amazing and Christina and Rebecca should embrace that and be proud of themselves. Now, they have a new goal they are going to be setting, to set a record of 100 wins and 1 loss in the last two years, and they can do it, they are more motivated than ever!
FUHS Girls Varsity Tennis faced Sunny Hills Thursday. It was a close contest but Fullerton came up short, losing 7-11. Sunny Hills has two powerhouse players that placed Fullerton in a hole from the get-go, beating up our singles lineup 6 sets (all 6-0). But Abigail Kelly, Kate Luengo and Hailey Kwok stepped up and managed to all beat Sunny's #3 singles (6-0, 6-2, 6-3), giving the team 3 points and a chance for the doubles to have a fighting chance. Unfortunately, it wasn't meant to be as Fullerton's doubles teams under-performed, winning only 4 of 9 sets played. The only shining spot of the day is the return of the winning ways from #1 doubles team, Christina Sfatcu and Rebecca Balarie, playing with more focus than ever after their winning streak snapped last Tuesday against Troy. They came out with a no nonsense attitude and promptly dispatched all three teams they faced (6-1, 6-1, 6-0).
This was a rough week for the team losing two close matches against the league's powerhouse, Troy 8-10 and Sunny Hills 7-11, and the team is taking it to heart. But we will continue to work hard and will have another shot at these two teams in a couple of weeks.
