FUHS - A California Distinguished School

Fullerton Union High School has been named a 2024 California Distinguished School, marking its fourth achievement of this caliber. This recognition, received through an email from the State Superintendent, underscores the dedication and hard work of our school community in ensuring student success. The selection process analyzed data from the 2023 Dashboard, focusing on academic achievement and a positive school climate. Criteria included exemplary performance in ELA and math, reduced suspensions, high graduation rates (for high schools), and closing the achievement gap. This achievement reflects the collective effort of our staff in continuously striving for excellence and challenging ourselves to do better for our students. Thank you all for your unwavering commitment! Go Tribe!

Activities

Jazz Ensemble performance at the Bowery in downtown Fullerton

The FUHS Jazz Ensemble made its return to the stages of downtown Fullerton for the first time since 2020 with a 40 minute set of music at the Bowery. The performance was part of a dining for dollars fundraiser for the Instrumental Music Program and the house was packed!

FUHS Students in Chapman University Honor Band

We had three students perform as part of the Chapman University Honor Band Festival this past weekend on Saturday February 24th, 2024. Seniors Amelia Burns and Evelyn Ishikawa as well as junior Cole Hanzel all were accepted into the ensemble and took part in a full day's worth of masterclasses and rehearsals prior to a wonderful performance that evening at the Musco Center for the Arts.

Supporting Mental Health

We had an excellent turnout during Phoenix House's tabling event this afternoon! Many students enthusiastically participated, receiving their heart-shaped stress relievers to wrap up the month of February!

ESports!

We're excited to announce that our gaming club is gaining momentum and we're looking to form teams for upcoming tournaments! After our last club rush, we had around 10 new students sign up, and the energy is electric!

The most popular games among our members include Overwatch, Valorant, and Minecraft on PC, as well as Super Smash Bros on the Nintendo Switch. It's amazing to see how this group comes together each week to have a blast and play with friends!

This is just the beginning, and we're thrilled to see where this club goes next! Join us and let's level up together! Thank you, Ms. Evans, for being a great advisor! 🚀

Softball

Our Softball team is on the road this week to play in the Dave Kops Tournament in Arizona. The girls are having a great time playing and bonding on this trip.

Baseball

Boys have had a nice start to the season. With a lot of injuries to the program this year and graduating 13 seniors last year. Also with very little practice in the last month or so with all the rain. Varsity team has started 5-3 and finished 3rd place in the Loara tournament which is one of the best tournaments in socal.Boys beat ranked No.17 Vista Murrieta in the LA Times 8-0. Also beating the reigning CIF champion Aliso Niguel 4-1.

Next Tuesday and Wednesday we will host Segerstrom and then Pacifica both games at 3PM. Also Coach Hill earned his 100th career win.

Track & Field

The girls and boys have posted numerous top marks in their first two meets of the season. Notable performances include a monster triple jump and school record by senior Makayla Felismino. Her mark of 35’ 0.5” breaks the old record by 1.5 feet! The team has also welcome freshman Madison Sibal and her 100m time of 13.61 along with her 200m time of 28.95. Alexa Lopez moved up on the 400m (1:03.10) and 800m (2:31.28), freshman Azumi Fuertes is also on the 800m (2:36.82) and 1600m (5:47.38), Brooke Tanner in the 1600m (6:10.80), Miley Basas in the 1600m (6:11.09), Reagan Glidewell in the 1600m (6:15) and 3200m (13:04), Ella Casto in the 3200m (13:53), Makenna Francisco in the 100m hurdles (19.65), Vinny Suarez Villavazo in the 100m hurdles (20.22), Matia Ornelas in the 300m hurdles (56.46), freshman Mahlia Jordan in the discus (79’2”), and Amaya Moreno in the high jump (4’8”) and 800m (2:49.70). The team will compete at the California Condor Invitational over the weekend!

Boys Volleyball

The boys had another strong week. Started with a 3-2 record on Saturday at the Tustin Tournament, winning them the bronze. Their 2 losses were very close games against some strong competitions, Tustin and Capistrano Valley Christian. The boys played competitively in both losses, pushing both of those games to deciding 3rd sets. This week, the boys defeated El Modena 3-1 on Monday, and Anaheim 3-0, setting up a match for the ages on Thursday against Samueli Academy, who came into the match undefeated. The boys took control of the 1st set, but Samueli stormed back to win the next 2 sets. The boys needed to win set 4 to force a deciding 5th set, and they did just win, eventually winning both 4th and 5th to win 3-2. Johnny Leonardo and Nathan Medina had big offensive games, Rowan Yeo continues to lead the defense and Hyunmin Kim leads in assists. The boys are now 8-2 for the season going into next week with some top tieredmatches against Canyon and Kennedy.

Swim:

This week our tribe swimmers headed to Rowland heights to compete against their Raiders. Many personal bests were made at this meet including our newest 500 swimmer to varsity Gabriel Bicksler who did a sub 6 minutes which is fantastic for a first timer. This weekend we will have the Highly competitive Los Amigos tournament, followed by Oxnard Academy on Tuesday and a tri meet with Segerstrom and Buena Park.

Off Season Sports News

Boys Soccer

Boys Soccer held their year ending banquet on Wednesday with 120 guests to recognize the outstanding athletes for boys soccer. The varsity MVP was Aiden Bengard who was also the offensive player of the year with Abraham Benavides. Aiden set the scoring record and was recognized as being tied for number eight overall for goals scored in a year. However, the big news was that we had 22 scholar athletes in our program. A very impressive accomplishment by our players.
