Week 5

We Are The Heart of Fullerton! ❤️

Good Afternoon Fullerton Families,

Our week was filled with activities. We started off the week in remembrance of the attacks on our country on 9/11/01. Thanks to our JROTC for helping put that together!

Club Rush was this week! We have so many groups on campus looking to do great things in support of our school community! Many want to provide a great space for students to explore their interests and others that want to explore more competition! We all can't wait to see what these clubs get done this year.

Teachers submitted progress report grades by last Friday. Please help us by following up with your student on their grades and making sure that they have turned in all of their assignments. You may also check yourself by logging on to your Aeries Portal.

Speech and Debate

Congratulations to Audrey Bae who was recognized at the school board meeting last Tuesday night for all of her amazing work and awards she has received! Audrey has been on the leadership team for Fullerton Union Speech and Debate for three years. She was the California State Champion for the Lincoln Douglas Debate 2022 and a student coach for the Fullerton Union Debate Team 2023.

Audrey earned the highest merit achievement, Premier Distinction by the end of her Junior year.

Over the summer she received the honor of Academic All-American from the National Speech and Debate Association. She was the National Speech and Debate Association Champion for the World Schools Debate 2023. Their final round was judged by a panel of 13 judges, and they got ballots from 12 of the 13 judges. This is the second consecutive year that the West Los Angeles District, the district that Fullerton Union is in, won the World Schools Debate. This is also the first time ever a student from Fullerton Union has been a national champion in the World Schools Debate. Congratulations Audrey!

Speech and Debate

The success continues for our Speech and Debate Program. On September 9th and 10th Senior Mackenzie Mauldin and Junior Joshua Lee competed at the National Speech and Debate Season Opener hosted by the University of Kentucky. It was an online event with 236 Public Forum teams. Fullerton Union's team came out strong with 3 wins in a row but then lost the next two. However, in true Tribe fashion, we came back for one more win to BREAK into the finals. In the first round of the final, we beat the 2nd seeded team. We ended up getting to Double, or the top 32 teams. This is a great way to start the year!

Activities

AVID

Fullerton AVID links up with Troy and Sunny Hills AVID for a tour of Cal State Fullerton, and a tour of Hope University alongside a student panel lunch.

MUN & Period Club

Fullerton's Model United Nations and Period Club worked together to collect period products and highlight the need to battle worldwide menstruation stigma. 1,200+ period products were delivered to the Cal State Los Angeles Food Pantry on Sept. 14. A growing number of college students face food insecurity and period poverty.

Football:

Last Friday was another great night of football at Fullerton Stadium. We celebrated Military Night, honoring servicemen and servicewomen in our community who are or were in the US Armed Forces. Our team put up a great fight against the Santa Fe Chiefs. We lit the score board up first in the first quarter. Santa Fe scored their only touch down in second quarter and our defense stood strong and did not allow anymore points from the Chiefs. We went on to score 3 more touchdowns for a WIN of 28-7.  Players of the game this week were Jeremie Diaz (Defense), Johnny Ibarra (Lineman), Evan Tellez-Soria (Special Teams), and in his first-ever high school football game Zach Fany (offense) who ran for 129 yards and scored an amazing 87 yard touchdown!

Cheer and Song:

Our Varsity program honored our nation’s military with a Camo themed Friday Night Light! Both Song & Cheer performed and had a blast cheering on our Tribe football team to a WIN!

Cross Country:

The boys & girls will compete at the Woodbridge Invitational this weekend which is the largest high school meet in the country. The meet features over 450 different schools from 15 different states! The meet begins at 5pm on Friday evening at Great Park of Irvine and concludes on Saturday evening. The girls are coming off a strong performance at the Freeway League meet and hope to move up in CIF rankings after this weekend. Morgan McAndrew will look to lower her school record and be the first girl in history to break 18 minutes for 3 miles while the team will look to set a new low for their top 5 scorers. On the boys side, Alejandro Hernandez will also look to break the school record and become the first boy under 15 minutes for 3 miles. The boys team will also be looking to set a new best for team time and possible school record!

Tennis:

The Girls Varsity Tennis had an intense match against a formidable team from Walnut High School Tuesday that lasted well into the dark, winning a close contest, 11-7. The singles crew of #1 Abigail Kelly (1-6, 6-1, 6-0), #2 Kate Luengo(0-6, 6-4, 6-1) and #3 Hailey Kwok (0-6, 6-2, 6-4) scored 6 points for the team. The #3 doubles team of Amber Elomina and Francine Bondoc (7-6, 7-6, 4-6) contributed 2 points, winning the last match in a tiebreaker under the cover of darkness. The #1 doubles team of Christina Sfatcu and Rebecca Balarie remains undefeated, defeating and extending their winning streak to 73 matches! They got a scare in the first set, down 2-5 to Walnut's #1 doubles. Asked about how she felt about the match being down 2-5, she responded, "this is not happening, we will not lose to this team." Christina and Rebecca gutted out the match, winning the next 5 games to snatch a victory out of their opponent's hands, winning 7-5, and then proceeded to destroy their next two opponents 6-0 and 6-2, keeping their winning streak alive. Amazing things are happening at FUHS.

The Girls JV had an easier time against Walnut's JV, winning comfortably 12-6. #1 singles, Audrey Shu, continues to win, winning all three sets played today (7-5, 6-0, 6-3), making that 18 straight wins for the preseason, despite not feeling 100%. #2 singles, the freshman phenom, Ella Kim, also won her three sets played (6‐2, 6-1, 6-2). These two players are making a strong case for moving up into the varsity ranks soon. #3 singles, Sophia Santos, made her singles debut, winning 2 of 3 sets (0‐6, 6-3, 6-4). Our newly formed doubles team of Alyson Hensley and Daniela Perez won all three sets (6-4, 6-1, 6-2). #3 doubles team of Brenna Williamson and Janelle Rodrigez contributed one point to the win.

In the second match of the week FUHS played Brea and the girls came home with a win. Beating Brea Olinda capped off a successful preseason for the Girls Varsity Tennis, going 7-0! FUHS handled Brea with ease as all three doubles teams, #1 Christina Sfatcu and Rebecca Balarie (6-0, 6-2, 6-2), #2 Nicole White and Bonnie Lynch (6-0, 6-2, 6-2) and #3 doubles Amber Elomina and Francine Bondoc (6-1, 6-3, 6-0), won all nine sets played. Sfatcu and Balarie continued to win as they extended their winning streak to 76 matches in a row. They are now in a serious hunt for 100. In singles, #1 Abigail Kelly (6-3, 6-0, 6-0) gutted out a tough first set, then proceeded to dismantle her next two opponents. #2 Kate Luengo (2-6, 6-2, 6-0) and #3 Hailey Kwok (1-6, 6-1, 6-0) played well and scored four for the team. Great preseason girls! Now it's for real as the regular season starts next week. Right off the bat, the team will face two Freeway League powerhouses, Troy and Sunny Hills. Let's make this a special season!

FUHS Girls JV Tennis also concluded their preseason on a high note (5-2), beating Brea's JV 11-7. Audrey Shu snapped her 18 sets winning streak but won 2 of 3 sets (6-3, 6-3, 5-7). Freshman Phenom, Ella Kim, continues to make her mark on the team, winning again all three sets played (6-0, 6-4, 7-6). #1 doubles team of Alyson Hensley and Daniela Perez won their 6th straight sets, winning all three played today (6-3, 6-1, 6-2). #2 doubles team of Brenna Williamson and Janelle Rodriguez won 2 of 3 sets (6-2, 6-7, 6-2) and #3 doubles team of Shanelle Thompson and Elysee Hua contributed 1 point for the team.

Let's keep working hard and playing hard! Go Tribe!!!

Girls Golf:

Girls Volleyball:

The girls lost 2 heart breaking matches this week On Monday, the ladies went to all 5 sets, but in the end, made a few too many mistakes in our attacking game, losing the 5th set 12-15. In the highly anticipated game against Sunny Hills, it definitely lived up to its hype. SH came in with a 16-2 record, having won both tournaments they’ve played in this year, including the OC Invitational, and for the first time in the season, our full roster is back healthy and available. It was a back and forth battle, pushing the match to a 5th set, which no other team has been able to do against them this season thus far. With our ladies at game point, 14-10, needing only 1 point to clinch the victory, we were, unfortunately, unable serve and or secure a pass as SH went on a 6-0 run to win the final set at 16-14, 3-2 match. Although they were devastating losses, the girls to be very optimistic over the remainder of the season. Sophia Camargo leads the team with her all around play on both sides of the net. Cora Sailhamer, continues to lead the team in assists and making some phenomenal defensive plays. Noah Chung leads the defense in digs and serve receive. Both our JV and Frosh are also continuing to battle, losing 2 close games each. Next up, at Sonora on Tuesday.
