Track and Field
The boys and girls competed at the Orange County Championships on Saturday, April 15th at Mission Viejo High School which featured the best of the best in every event. Each was allotted two entries into the meet per event and there is no guarantee that those entries were going to be accepted given the high level of competition.
The girls highlights included Morgan McAndrew winning the varsity rated 1600m with a time of 5:21.59, Melina Sibal finishing 4th overall in both the frosh-soph 100m (13.31) and 200m (26.96) Alexa Lopez finishing 10th in the frosh-soph 400m (64.29), Amaya Moreno in the varsity 400m (66.71), Janelle Flores in the varsity 400m (67.10) and 300 hurdles (54.06), Sofia Tabbal in the frosh-soph 1600m (5:49.13), Brooke Tanner in the frosh-soph 1600m (6:21.39), Layla Thornton in the varsity shot put (34-05.00) and discus (103-03.00), and Janessa Gallardo in the frosh-soph shot put (22-01.00) and discus (73-03).
On the boys side, Dorian Yepez placed 4th in both the 110 high hurdles (15.72) and 300 hurdles (41.47), Alejandro competed in the varsity 1600 (4:40.24), Jack Golla in the 1600m (4:37.42) and 800m (2:08.19), Troy Fernandez in the 800m (2:08.23), Nathan Karcher in the 800 (2:10.05), Marcos Lerma in the shot put, Gavin Ledbetter in the 400m (54.93) and 200m (24.08), Nathan Limon in the varsity 3200m (10:17.85), Ryan Leitner in the 400m (53.13) and 200m, Chris Cooper in the frosh-soph 110 hurdles (20.72) Dylan Cobbs in the 300 hurdles (47.03), and Brandon Miyasato in the 300 hurdles (47.44). The boys frosh-soph also set a school record in the 4x100, clocking 46.24 and also finished 4th overall in the 4x400 (3:44.04).
On Wednesday, April 19th, the team competed in the freeway league prelims which served as a qualification round for the freeway league finals to be held on Wednesday, April 26th at Fullerton High School. Morgan McAndrew set a new lifetime best in the 400m (60.31) and moved up significantly on Fullerton’s all time list. Next week league finals will crown league champions and athletes will have a chance to qualify for CIF. Field events will begin at 4pm while running events will start at 6pm.
